Picture this: You’re on your way home from the dog park. Your little pup sits in the back seat and sticks his head out the window. All of a sudden, you remember that you need to pick up some deodorant from the grocery store. But what to do with your furry friend? They don’t allow dogs in the store, and you don’t feel comfortable tying him to a telephone pole, so what’s the harm in leaving him in the car for a few minutes? It’s sunny outside and the weather report said temperatures would only be in the 70s. Besides, you’ll only be gone for a few minutes. Unfortunately, this scenario is far too common among dog owners. Everyone knows that leaving a dog in a hot car is a bad idea, but some of the most loving pet owners might not understand how dangerous even a few short minutes can be. Did you know that the temperature in a car can rise as much as 20 degrees in 10 minutes? For animals who cool themselves by panting, this is bad news, as it ends up making the car humid and hotter as a result. These two pups were left in the car for a few minutes while their owner went into the store. But, unlike some other dogs, these two weren’t going to wait patiently. What they do in response is the perfect message to dog owners everywhere who think it is okay to leave their pets in the car. Don’t forget to SHARE this video with your friends and family! Started by Michael Aufhauser and Irene Florence, Gut Aiderbichl is an animal sanctuary based in Austria. The organization started small, only housing 25 animals, but has been growing steadily since its inception. Today, Gut Aiderbichl has 25 sanctuaries in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and France in order to provide the best care to over 5.600 rescued animals. The organization focuses a lot of their efforts on larger animals such as horses and cattle, but they also take in sheep, pigs and goats. These animals are difficult to keep in conventional shelters, so the sanctuary does its best to care for those that are often overlooked. As you can see from this recently-rescued bull, their efforts are very much appreciated. Read more: http://www.wimp.com/rescued-bull-hay-straw/
With the largest brain mass among land animals, elephants are some of the smartest creatures on the planet. They’re capable of using tools to solve puzzles, understanding human language and even feeling empathy. Perhaps the most admirable elephant behavior is their mourning the dead and comforting others in distress. Their love extends beyond their own species, though, as this handler learned when his friend pretended to attack him. He wasn’t in any real danger, but the elephant that he cared for didn’t waste any time coming to his rescue. Thongsri the elephant is a shining example of the affection that these creatures are capable of. Read more: http://www.wimp.com/elephant-protects-handler/
They say that once you learn to ride a bike, you never forget, but how one achieves what you are about to see … we’re at a loss. While Nicole Frýbortová is one of the great athletes of our time, few have heard of the professional artistic cyclist. Her sport is niche and rarely covered by media, but her skills are undeniable. It’s no wonder that she’s a favorite to win the next UCI Indoor Cycling World Championship. Artistic cycling blends gymnastics, biking and ballet, and although it may sound like something females would enjoy, they were unable to participate on a professional level until 1970. While women are still far less likely to travel by bike in everyday life than men, they dominate the sport. There are doubles and teams that perform together, but Nicole prefers to ride alone. It’s clear that she has really become one with her bike – take a look. Read more: http://www.wimp.com/nicole-frybortova-ems-cup-bike-dancing/
Of all the Jewish holidays that happen throughout the year, Hanukkah is one of the most well known. Sometimes written as Chanukah or Ḥanukah, the holiday celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt. The celebrations traditionally involved the progressive lighting of a menorah on each night of Hanukkah. Hanukkah traditions usually call for the consumption of latkes during the festivities, but the principles of their faith require that certain foods be avoided throughout the year. However, store-bought foods frequently contain a mishmash of hard-to-decipher ingredients. To help make things a bit simpler, the labeling system in this video was developed so that people have fewer issues when trying to eat kosher. Unless you’re blessed with perfect eyesight, you are more than experienced with trying on glasses. It can be a nerve-wracking experience because the glasses that you pick will not only change how you see the world, but how the world sees you. Each new pair of glasses is like an entirely new face that you are trying on, and you want to make absolutely sure that you pick the one that suits you the best. But what do you do if you’re too little to make that choice? Most children don’t get glasses until elementary school at the earliest, but that doesn’t mean that toddlers and infants don’t have eye problems. Some babies, like the four-month-old featured in this video, have serious vision issues that need to be treated sooner rather than later. Baby Leo has a condition called oculocutaneous albinism, a disorder that affects hair, skin, and eyes. Unfortunately, this has prevented Leo from seeing properly and left his vision blurry and cluttered. The good news is, doctors told Leo’s parents that there was a solution. Corrective lenses for infants have become more common recently as new models have been designed that work with the unique size and shape of a baby’s head. So, Leo’s parents had a special pair made for him, with the hopes that it would let him see the world clearly for the first time. When it was time to try the glasses on for the first time, Leo’s father decided to film it. We won’t spoil what happens next, but we can guarantee that you will have a huge smile on your face the whole time. Be sure to SHARE this heartwarming moment with your family and friends! According to estimates by the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), nearly 7.6 million pets and companion animals enter into animal shelters every year. Of those, 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. Thanks to overcrowding, lack of resources, and poor legislature, nearly 2.7 million animals in the shelter systems end up being euthanized. A lot of these euthanized animals are ones that never got adopted due to behavioral issues. Imagine if you were sent to a shelter after living with a loving family for many years, or worse still, after having been abused and neglected. It’s heartbreaking, and it’s no wonder that so many shelter dogs are timid or frightened. Sadly, these shy puppies aren’t popular for adoption since families prefer puppies who are calm and playful right off the bat. While any dog getting rescued from a shelter is a good thing, it is pretty sad that these scared puppies don’t get the shot they deserve. That’s where the Humane Society of Missouri’s Shelter Buddies Reading Program comes in. This brilliant initiative trains kids aged 6-15 to pick up on a dog’s body language. If the dog appears stressed or anxious, the kids sit down with them and read to them aloud. If the dog responds positively by showing interest and calming down, they are rewarded with a treat. This helps condition them towards more desirable behavior, which leads to a greater chance of being adopted. The program also has the added benefit of letting kids practice their reading skills with a non-judgmental audience, so it’s a win-win all around. The video below shows the Shelter Buddies’ first annual “Deck the Howls” holiday event in December of 2015. Oceans are some of the last great mysteries remaining on Earth. They make up 71 percent of our planet’s surface, yet an astounding 95 percent of them are still unexplored. Sometimes, though, captivating ocean life will crawl onto the shore, allowing us to have an in-depth look at its unique behavior, as is the case with these baby crabs at Legian Beach in Bali. There are many factors, like bad weather and predatory fish, that prevent crab larvae from reaching the surface. But when the conditions are just right, a large group of larvae are lucky enough to make it to dry land, shed their casing, and experience life above the surface. It’s moments like these when nature demonstrates how intriguing it can be, making us excited about what mysteries lie in the 95 percent of the ocean we’ve yet to see. As a society, we sometimes focus too much on the chaos of the animal kingdom. Yes, there’s lots of animals hunting and eating other animals for food, but what about the gentler aspects of nature. What about friendship? Today we examine one such friendship, between an adorable snail and two peaceful cats. First, let’s address this chill snail. There it sits, just hanging out with these cats, looking at the world outside its shell and liking what it sees. This snail has the friendly disposition of a Disney character. Nothing phases it. Even a kiss from a cat. Then you have these two peace loving cats. One sits with the snail hanging out on its paw, giving gentle licks to its feline partner who seems slightly perplexed that the snail doesn’t want to sit on him. It’s cool; the other cat knows how to show his affection for the snail. Soft, little kisses. We don’t exactly understand how this friendship came to be, but we’re thrilled it exists.
