I can’t even imagine how scary it must be to have a cheetah on your tail like the impalas in this video do. We’ve seen before that cheetahs can be friendly with other species, but first and foremost these animals are honed predators with incredible speed, great eyesight, and a set of big, sharp teeth at their disposal. I also can’t imagine how scary it must be to have a large, deer-like animal like an impala jump through your window into your car. As we’ve said on another, if you do happen to find yourself filming large wildlife like this, stay in the car, keep the windows shut, and LOCK YOUR DOORS. When Dave Tolley got a ticket to see The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1985, he never imagined it would be the day his life would totally change. Tolley had played piano for years but was still waiting on his big break. He got that chance when the musical act Johnny Carson had previously booked cancelled at the last minute. So Carson decided to turn to the audience. Dressed in a t-shirt and sandals, Tolley nailed a version of Memories for the Broadway show “Cats.” The audience roared with delight and he got the attention of Johnny Carson who invited him back on the show a few months later, this time as a featured guest. Tolley’s appearance catapulted his career and he went on to write seven musicals as well as compose music for Disney theme parks. Have you ever been so upset by society that you wished you could just pack up and create your own country? That’s the premise of the episode of “Dragnet 1967” that this inspiring monologue comes from. In it, three teenage boys want to leave America and create their own country, which is a monumental task for anyone to accomplish, let alone three naive kids. Here, Detective Joe Friday convinces the three teens, along with the audience at home, that America is a country worth improving. Citing specific historical events, Friday explains how America has consistently improved for as long as it has existed, and will continue to do so as long as we don’t abandon it. His words, now 47 years old, are just as applicable today as they were back then, reminding us never to give up on making our country the best it can be. Raccoons are notorious little criminals when it comes to human food. Garbage, too. Head into any area with lots of the adorable (but scheming) masked mammals and you’ll see all sorts of solutions that homeowners have come up with for dealing with these clever critters, from a simple bungee cord to keeping trash indoors. My personal favorite is the wood and wire mesh cages you see in areas where it’s not just raccoons that you have to worry about. There’s something rather humorous about having to lock your garbage up for safekeeping. Nevertheless, even when you take precautions, the smartest raccoons will always figure out a way to their heart’s desire, like this particular furry thief, who seems to have snuck his way into a doughnut shop. These days, there’s not a lot of issues we can all agree on, but if there’s one, it’s that horses are the best. Whether they’re strutting their beauty in front of a big crowd, showing off their stylish new cut, or just dancing to music, there are endless reasons to fall in love with these magnificent creatures. If you’re a horse lover, then you’re certain to melt with this video that features a baby horse taking her first steps in the outside world. While the sight of the filly, delightfully named Coconut, prancing with joy is amazing enough, it’s the backstory of the young horse that makes this truly special. If you look at the Coconut’s face you’ll notice a strange pattern – it actually means something very special. She is a what’s known as a “Medicine Hat” horse because of the unique pattern seen on her head. Medicine Hat horses can be identified by an all white coat with colored patches over the ears and the head. What’s so significant about Medicine Hat horses? For centuries, different civilizations have believed these animals hold special powers and viewed them with reverence. Some Native American cultures believe that if you rode a Medicine Hat horse into battle, you would be invincible. Though most people today don’t think these horses hold magical powers, they still are incredibly special for how rare they are. Remember to SHARE this adorable video with your friends and family. Just about everyone loves it when the air gets crisp and leaves begin to change color, from green to an array of brilliant hues, from bright red, to bright yellow. Eventually, those leaves fall down, and while not all of us enjoy raking them up, most of us enjoy the next part. But most of us go through life blissfully unaware of the reason behind the change in color. We know it signals the change in seasons, but what’s really going on? This video from science channel MinuteEarth does a great job of explaining. Turns out, it’s nature’s way of recycling, but it’s way more complex than that. Where do you purchase your eggs? Unless you own a few chickens, you’re probably going out and purchasing your eggs at the grocery store or farmer’s market. But did you know that not all eggs are created equal? That’s right, YouTuber “bevyh1” has brought us an eye-opening look at the difference between dairy products from the store and the farm. The difference lies in how they were raised. The chickens used to produce many store-bought eggs live their lives in cages and eat a primarily corn-based diet. On the other hand, farm chickens are given plenty of room to run around, spread their wings and supplement their diets with as many bugs they can dig up and hunt down. Don’t believe these lifestyle changes make a difference? Look at the yolks and see for yourself. The yolk from the farm fresh egg is a darker, richer shade of orange/yellow, whereas the other two eggs, both of which were purchased at the store, produce a pale yellow yolk. Not only are the farm fresh eggs healthier for you, but they boast a richer flavor than their supermarket counterparts. She also offers some other useful health tips in the video, like substituting potatoes for bread and using all natural salt instead of over-processed table salt. If you are interested in finding a local farm near you that sells fresh eggs, this website will help you locate the nearest one. So, when it comes to which came first, the chicken or the egg, it doesn’t really matter, as long as that egg is farm fresh and that chicken was allowed to roam free. Everyone is likely familiar with the AMBER Alert System. Developed in 1996 by a team of broadcasters and police from Dallas-Fort Worth, the system was created following the disappearance and murder of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman. Although the young girl inspired the creation of the AMBER Alert, it is not named after her; the name is an acronym for America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response. Since the implementation in Dallas-Forth Worth, the system has spread throughout the United States, inspiring other cities and states to create their own systems. In the nearly 20 years that have passed since the original AMBER Alert System was put into place, approximately 800 children have been returned to their families directly due to AMBER Alert. Developments in technology are constantly being used to make sure these notifications reach as wide an audience as possible. Since 2012, AMBER Alerts have been issued as Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), text-like alerts that are automatically delivered to any WEA-capable devices in the area where the AMBER Alert has been issued. With the widespread reach of AMBER Alerts, there is also a downside; some fear that people are taking less notice of the notifications than they used to. Since the implementation of the WEA, for instance, cell phone users have complained that the alerts are too frequent, don’t include enough specific details, or are from regions far from their location. “There’s a very delicate balance between how much is enough and how much (alerting) is too much,” said Damon Penn, the Assistant Administrator of the Response Directorate at FEMA (who also uses the WEA system). “The big concern is over-alerting, and that’s what we’re focused on.” All agencies that utilize the WEA are continually refining their use of the system to avoid causing the public to tune the messages out. Luckily for Brooklynne Enix, at least, Steve Adams was still listening. H/T: ABC News Read more: http://www.wimp.com/brooklynne-enix-amber-alert-veteran-steve-adams/
Growing up, my mother always told me that I looked crazy whenever I would talk to myself, but I never paid it any mind. I liked talking to myself in certain situations because vocalizing my thoughts helped me clear my mind and organize my ideas a little better. I also like to pace when I’m brainstorming so between that, the muttering to myself and my long, frizzy hair that sometimes gets disheveled when I think, I’m sure I looked pretty wild. According to some newer research, however, talking to yourself isn’t crazy at all – in fact, it has several benefits. As I stated above, talking to yourself can actually help you organize your thoughts. Additionally, it can help with memory recall and complex problem solving. As children, self-directed speech is critically important in being able to learn language and work through tasks like tying shoelaces. The video below provides a helpful explanation of why talking to yourself isn’t crazy and is actually a pretty smart thing to do. Note: talking to yourself in this instance is defined as vocalizing some of your thought processes. It should not be confused with potentially hearing and/or responding to voices that only you can hear, which is a potential symptom of serious mental disorders such as schizophrenia or having multiple personalities.
