One of the most romantic gestures a boy can do for a girl is give her flowers. Flowers have held significance as gifts since the middle ages and has kept evolving in the years since, with different flowers taking on different meanings. We tend to associate red roses with romance, as you probably saw when stores stocked up on them for Valentine’s Day this past weekend, but after reading this story, you might reconsider which flower is the most romantic. It might sound like something out of a Nicholas Sparks novel, but we promise you this story is 100 percent true. Mr. and Mrs. Kuroki were a happy couple living in the Miyazaki Prefecture located in rural Japan. They owned a small dairy farm and cared for their herd, as well as their two children, every day. The work was tough, but their love for each other made it much easier. Unfortunately, Mrs. Kuroki lost her sight one day due to complications with her diabetes. She was 52 years old at the time and still believed that she had many good years ahead of her working on the farm and enjoying retirement with her loving husband. Upon realizing that she wouldn’t be able to see again for the rest of her life, Mrs. Kuroki was devastated. She responded by cutting herself off from the outside world and spending her days inside. Mr. Kuroki knew how much his wife loved the outdoors and hated seeing her in such despair. That’s when he had a brilliant, and smelly, idea. Mr. Kuroki decided that he would create a flower garden for his wife and fill it with thousands of flowers. He believed the pleasant smell would encourage her to go outside and reconnect with the world she used to know. It took him two whole years, but her husband managed to turn their farm into a sea of flowers. The result was even more spectacular than he could have ever imagined. As for his wife’s reaction? You’ll just have to see for yourself. Check out the images below to learn more about this romantic project and what their farm looks like today. This is Mr. And Mrs. Kuroki. Despite her blindness, Mrs. Kuroki loves spending time outside like she used to. YouTube It’s all thanks to the thousands of shibazakura flowers her husband planted for her. Shintomi Machiyakuba Also known as “Moss Phlox,” these flowers are a creeper plant, so they quickly spread across their acres of farmland. YouTube Mrs. Kuroki might not be able to see their rich colors, but she can smell every ounce of love her husband poured into them. Yoshiyuki Matsumoto Their farm has grown into a tourist attraction, with up to 7,000 people visiting their land per day during March and April. It’s 3 a.m. and something furry crawls across your face. An average person would scream, jump out of bed, turn on the lights and call animal control. But for Matt and Kylie, employees at the Symbio Wildlife Park in Australia, this is a normal night. The couple decided to adopt Imogen, a young koala, and raise her in their own home. Imogen’s mother, Kelly, allowed Matt and Kylie to adopt her daughter after deciding to adopt another koala herself. Seeing that Imogen was already strong, Kelly allowed the couple to take her daughter so she could focus more on her newly adopted son. As tough as raising a koala can be, there’s no doubt Matt and Kylie are thankful for one koala’s act of compassion that gave them the opportunity to raise Imogen. If there’s one thing that can be said about parents, it’s that they are loyal to their children. Obviously, some people are much better parents than others, but any loving parent will tell you that they’d do whatever it takes to protect their child. Raising a kid in today’s society can be terrifying. The Internet has made bullying easier than ever before, perpetuating harmful stereotypes and hurting people in the privacy of their own home. Sometimes, though, people may not even know they’re perpetuating one of these stereotypes, which is why it’s vital that we have open dialogues about the things that make us different. Canadian dad Robb Scott experienced this firsthand when he overheard a fellow father explaining to his two sons what Down syndrome is. Scott’s son has Down syndrome, which is why it was especially heartbreaking when he heard a father tell his sons that it was an illness. Instead of interrupting, Scott continued about his business, not wanting to cause a scene in public. But, later that day, Scott felt that he needed to tell the world about what he overheard and say out loud what he wishes he would have had the courage to say to the man who called his son’s Down syndrome an illness. You see, for Robb Scott and his wonderful son, the word “illness” couldn’t be a worse way to describe Down syndrome. While technically a chromosomal disorder, Scott views his son’s Down syndrome as the best thing to ever happen to him. Parents may not be able to protect their children from everything, but they do have the power to defend them and remind them how much they love them. We’re living in something of a golden age. It might not seem like it when you turn on the news, but make no mistake, things are pretty amazing right here, right now. When you see this video demonstrating a simple, effective way to wash pillows, you might lament the current state of household affairs. Shouldn’t we all know how to wash pillows? After all, we should be washing them. Every three to six months, according to many experts on the subject. Between just a general, “ugh, these are dirty” feeling and the fact that unwashed pillows develop a stunning host of fungi and bacteria, there are plenty of reasons to wash them. But many of us don’t know how to wash them, or that we even should. What’s the deal? Why don’t they teach this stuff? Well, they used to, in school through classes like home economics, one of many important classes many schools no longer offer. So if we’re forgetting how to do simple, necessary things, how could this be a golden age? Well, because of people like Jillee at One Good Thing, a blog and YouTube video series centered around simple but useful “good things” you can do to save time, money, or help you keep your house clean. They’ve taken up the slack and filled the void left by formal education and made it easier than ever to learn way more than you ever could before. Home ec could never dream of teaching all the information over an entire school year that the thousands of creative professionals on YouTube manage to put out in a single day. We all have a story of a unique neighbor that added a little extra something to our lives. Growing up, there was a man in our family’s neighborhood named John who would always bring us candy and fun gifts. In return, we would bake him cookies and play with his dog. These kind of friendly relationships exist all over the world, and it’s nice to stop and appreciate them sometimes. In a small town in Ohio, a friendly neighbor got a surprise she never expected. Doris is an 88-year-old woman who is nicknamed “grandma” because of the way she treats all the kids in her community. Every morning, she walks to the edge of her driveway to blow kisses at the passing school bus. In the five years since Doris began doing this, she hasn’t missed a single day. It’s become a tradition for both Doris and the kids, who can count on receiving her love every day. As Doris’ birthday approached, the school wanted to do something for her to show how much they appreciate what she has given to them. So instead of just driving by, the school bus came to a stop right outside Doris’ home and the kids began to sing “Happy Birthday” to grandma. It was a touching moment that Doris never saw coming, and one that she won’t soon forget. To top it off, the students blew kisses back to Doris to show how much they cared. “Grandma” plans to keep waving and sending love to the kids as long as she can. When it comes to global superstars, not many can compare to Celine Dion. She is the best-selling Canadian artist ever and has sold over 200 million records over the course of her illustrious career. Her hit song, “My Heart Will Go On,” can be heard at every slow dance throughout the world. Unfortunately, Celine has gone through a couple of horrible tragedies over the last few weeks. First, her husband and manager Rene Angelil passed away after a battle with cancer. The couple first met in 1980 and got married fourteen years later. Celine and Rene were one of the most beloved pairs in the music industry, and his death brought a wave of sadness to everyone who knew them. Two days after Rene’s passing, Celine’s brother Daniel died of cancer. The tragedy resulted in an outpouring of support for the singer who had supported so many others through her work. Six years before the tragedies, Celine let cameras inside of her home to get an inside look at the arrival of her twins. The footage shows Celine and Rene as parents and not as the global icons we imagine them to be. It’s a bittersweet video, but it shows how deep the connection between the two of them was. Getting trapped in a sinking car is something most of us never think of. Although the chances of being involved in such an accident are relatively small, it’s always good to be prepared just in case. You never know when you might need to escape such a situation. Better yet, having an understanding of how glass works could prove to be invaluable in helping you free yourself from a submerged car. In the video below, Dustin from the popular YouTube channel SmarterEveryDay explains the science behind car windshields, and how you can use this knowledge to prevent yourself from drowning in a crashed vehicle. As you may already know, car windshields are not made out of the same material as the glass on your table top or cabinet door. That kind of glass is called annealed glass. You won’t see any car with annealed glass because it breaks off into large sharp pieces when exposed to a lot of force or heat. Instead, cars use what is known as tempered glass. This type of glass is very impact-resistant and breaks off into small, square pieces during an impact. Knowing the difference between the properties of annealed glass and tempered glass is essential if you want to survive a sinking car. Since tempered glass is reinforced, it takes a lot more force to break it. When people are in a panicked situation such as being trapped in a submerged car, they may think that hitting the center of the glass will cause it to break. That’s the wrong thing to do. Instead, hit the edges of the window to shatter the rest of the glass and escape your vehicle. In situations where every second counts, simply knowing which location to hit could save your life. The video below goes into more detail about the different properties of car windshields and how you can break them in an emergency. Be sure to SHARE this important information with your family and friends. H/T: SmarterEveryDay Read more: http://www.wimp.com/how-to-escape-from-your-car-underwater/
It takes a lifetime to master an instrument in most cases, but for Eduarda Henklein, five years was enough time to build a truly magnificent foundation on the drums. This little girl isn’t even out of kindergarten and she’s already a better percussionist than most adults. Eduarda’s musical ability is certainly prodigious, but there may be a genetic basis for her talent. Both of her parents are also accomplished professional musicians in their own right, so it’s probably safe to say that music is in her blood. In this particular video, Eduarda shows off her mastery of the drums as she plays along to the Van Halen classing, “Jump.” Remember to SHARE this incredible performance with your friends.
