Elephants are incredibly noble, majestic creatures. Despite their large size and sometimes clumsy demeanour, they’re actually highly intelligent animals with incredibly sharp memories. Some elephants have been known to remember each other even after several decades of separation. They are also highly social animals who form strong emotional bonds not just with each other, but also with any humans who may be taking care of them. In this video, we see a glimpse of what is a daily ritual for a baby elephant, Kham La, and some members of her herd. Kham La lives at the Elephant Nature Park in Thailand. Her name means “Darling” in Thai, and ever since she and her mother were brought to the park a few years ago, that’s exactly what she’s been. Among the many volunteers that work at the park, Kham La’s favorite seems to be a volunteer tractor driver named Darrick. Every morning as Darrick drives his tractor route around the park, she runs over to him as soon as she spots him. She trumpets loudly to let him know she’s ready for her morning cuddle session, which Darrick seems all too happy to oblige her with. Clearly, these two have a very special connection. Moving is one of the most stressful things you can do, which is why many people opt for hiring a moving company. While convenient, you also run the risk of movers damaging your belongings, charging you an arm and a leg, or even running off with your stuff. In Japan, however, moving is more like an art form than a chore, as demonstrated by this crew of passionate movers. Read more: http://www.wimp.com/the-japanese-art-of-moving/
Here at Wimp.com, we love a DIY video. There’s nothing more satisfying than rolling up your sleeves and tackling a complicated project. Nothing beats that sense of accomplishment. But for every successful DIY project, there’s a dozen that go wrong. Let’s just say this guy’s project ended up in the latter category. We love dogs here at Wimp. We love their adorable faces, their happy-go-lucky attitudes, their wagging tails, even their occasionally hilariously bad behavior. But let’s face it, barking is never anyone’s favorite aspect of dogs. Sometimes it can be cute, or even helpful, but more often than not it’s something you’re not really interested in. Most dogs can be successfully trained to keep barking to a minimum. But can barking be funny? And would you want to train your dog to bark? In the case of one Japanese woman and her pup, the answer to both of those questions is a resounding yes. She has taught her dog to very cleverly bark at different volume levels. All the way from a “shout” to a “whisper” of a bark. The results are not only adorable, they’re surprisingly funny to watch in action. This dog seems to be pretty clever, and be in quite a bit of control over his own voice. Or maybe she’s just really, really good at training. I certainly wouldn’t mind her coming over and working her magic on my beagle. If I could tell him to speak a little more quietly, I think everyone within a few miles of me would be eternally grateful. As it is, you definitely known when he’s spotted a squirrel. Or the garbage man. Or a leaf. Or if he’s bored and wants to come inside. Or if he’s hungry. Or, well, I guess he doesn’t need much of a reason to let loose the loudest howl in the world. He is a beagle, after all. Read more: http://www.wimp.com/dog-barks-loudly-softly-owner-training/
Where would we be without our mothers? While both parents are instrumental in raising a child, I think it’s safe to say that we all have a special connection with our mothers from the beginning. After carrying us for nine months, our mothers finally give birth and immediately provide us with the nourishment we need to survive. How cool is that? With Mother’s Day about a week away, it’s the perfect time to reflect on everything that our moms do for us. Mothers take care of their children in big ways, like working to pay for food and shelter, and small ways, like reading a story before bed. One of the most special things my mother ever did for me happened when I was in kindergarten. Upon seeing how nervous I was to leave her, my mom would drive an extra loop around the school before dropping me off. It didn’t matter if it made her late – she understood how important those few extra minutes were to me, and I know she would do it again in a heartbeat. Recently, Proctor & Gamble released a video in honor of the mothers who raised this summer’s Olympians. These athletes are among the best in the world, but none of them would be where they are today without a supportive mother. Even when we don’t believe in ourselves, our moms never lose faith. This Mother’s Day, remember to say “thank you” to your mom for everything she does for you. Don’t forget to SHARE this heartwarming tribute with your family and friends! In 2013, Stephen Colbert was asked to give the keynote speech during the University of Virginia’s valedictory exercises. Standing before the student body, Colbert began to speak and opened with his normal sense of irreverent humor. “I believe that means I am this year’s valedictorian, and I am as shocked as you are because I didn’t make it to many classes this year,” Colbert said. “You guys must’ve really tanked your finals. Thank you for that.” The jokes kept coming, but as his speech went on the tone began to change slightly. Addressing a recent TIME magazine piece, which called the graduating class the “me, me, me” generation, Colbert spoke of the struggles these students would face in the real world after college. His answer? For graduates to not allow others to define their reality. “Every generation must define itself, and so make the world that suits itself. If you must find your own path, and we have left you no easy path, then decide now to choose the hard path that leads to the life and the world you want.” Read more: http://www.wimp.com/stephen-colbert-commencement/
Adele is no stranger to the hits charts, and it’s for good reason: she’s got some serious pipes. So, it should be no surprise that her songs make very popular choices for covers … Heck, even Adele likes to give impersonating Adele a try! Her new hit, “Hello,” has inspired many renditions, but perhaps none as unique as the one Anthony Vincent, the genius behind Ten Second Songs, has put forth. Vincent records recognizable songs in the vocal styles of various musical artists. The project began as a way for him to put his production and vocal skills on display, in hopes of getting voice-over work. However, it’s gone way beyond that, considering his YouTube channel has over 1.5 million subscribers and 76 million views. Did you know that the average person will have up to seven different careers in their lifetime? While the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not keep official records on an individual’s number of careers, an average of seven has come up over and over again in independent studies. According to Forbes, job-hopping is only becoming more prevalent – in fact, 91% of millennials say they don’t expect to stay at a job for more than three years. If the numbers are right, that could mean working more than 20 different jobs in their lifetime. Sounds kind of exhausting, right? At Sutter Health Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland, California, however, is a woman who has been employed for 70 years. The 90-year-old, self-proclaimed “Frank Sinatra groupie,” started with the company as a fresh-faced young nurse on April 10, 1946. After serving as a physician’s assistant for 59 years, she moved to patient relations, which (as you’ll see) is a perfect fit for her bright and bubbly personality. Perhaps the most amazing part is that Elena has only taken a total of four sick days in that entire time! Elena has a few secrets to her success, but the top two? “Keep moving” and “wear heels.” While my feet are questioning the second bit, there’s no doubt that when you look good, you feel good. The spirit and passion that Elena brings to work every day is something we should all strive for, whether we change jobs seven times or work in the same building for 70 years. As Elena says, “I want to work forever.” And we think she just might! Be sure to SHARE this inspirational video with your friends and family! While this video looks absolutely stunning, you probably find yourself wondering what in the world is happening. We’ll do our best to paraphrase NASA’s comprehensive, and extremely complex, explanation of this phenomenon. What you are seeing here are “tidal disruptions” as a star is torn apart by a black hole that it got too close to. When this happens, the majority of the star’s mass is pulled towards the black hole in the form of filaments which later become a smooth disk that is easily visible in x-rays. The All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae observed portions of a tidal disruption entitled ASASSN-14li in November 2014. The black hole that caused this disruption resides in PGC 043234, a galaxy about 290 million light-years away from our own. Based on the information NASA recorded, an artist designed this rendition of the tidal disruption in action. Read more: http://www.wimp.com/black-hole-destroys-nearby-star/
