These Masters Can Slice Wood So Thin You’d Think It Was Paper

If you’ve ever stepped into a wood shop, you’ve probably seen a hand plane. This simple tool usually features a blade inclined on a flat surface that is used to smooth out and flatten wood. It’s a staple of work rooms everywhere but in Japan, planing is its art form. Each year craftsmen around Japan gather for a yearly planing competition to see who can carve the thinnest strip of wood using this deceptively simple tool. What might sound silly at first becomes a powerful challenge when you realize the levels of thickness each contestant is trying to achieve. The winning strip of wood was cut just nine microns thick. For comparison, a human red blood cell is 5 microns across. If you set two blood cells end to end, it would be just a little bit bigger than the final thickness achieved by these competitors. The Best Use For Olive Garden’s ‘Never Ending Pasta Pass’

Olive Garden is synonymous with high school dates, suburban life and, of course, its unlimited soup and salad deals. Who among us hasn’t binged there at least once before? I thought not. In September 2014, Olive Garden, offered up a limited-time promotion for the “Never Ending Pasta Pass.” For $100, any carboholic could attempt to eat as much pasta as they wanted for seven weeks straight. Enter Matt Tribe. His only goal was to share his gluttonous love for all things gluten with others over the course of 100 meals. Starting with family, friends, colleagues, and even the UPS guy, Tribe soon extended his self-proclaimed “random acts of pasta” to those in the most need within his community. Meet The 14-Year-Old Homeowner

What were you doing at 14? I can’t even remember, but I certainly wasn’t doing anything like Willow Tufano. At only 14 years of age, the young entrepreneur was already into her first home. She didn’t stop there, though. She bought a second, and made a lot of waves as “America’s youngest landlord.” She’s since moved on from the real estate business, having sold both homes to give her more flexibility as she pursues her education, but the story of how she arrived at that point at such a young age is remarkable. It all started with Craigslist. The service is popular among many people looking for a deal on furniture, electronics, cars, and more. It’s important to be careful; there are plenty of scammers out there. It helps that Willow began by mining the “free” section of the site, where getting quality goods is often simply a matter of making it to someone’s front yard before everyone else. Willow managed to turn being quick on the Craigslist draw into a career, eventually earning enough money to purchase the aforementioned houses. At 14, she needed her mom’s help in buying the home. We’ll let Willow tell that story in her own words on Ellen. Don’t forget to SHARE this smart teen’s story with your friends and family! Why You Shouldn’t Celebrate Too Soon

If you still think that the NBA is the best place to watch edge-of-your-seat basketball action, we’re sorry to tell you that you’re wrong. Everyone knows that Japanese youth basketball leagues are home to the fiercest competition on the planet. While this might be a bit of an exaggeration, the Momochi Shooting Stars recently played their hearts out in a game that they won’t be forgetting anytime soon.  Their opponents staged an impressive comeback that put the two teams neck and neck for the final 30 seconds of the game. With two seconds left and two penalty shots awarded to the other team, all hope seemed lost for the Shooting Stars. But what happened next taught them, and their opponents, that the game isn’t over until the final second ticks off the clock. The Magic Of Mucus

Thanks to the common cold, basically no one likes mucus. Even the word itself is enough to make some people queasy, but science tells us mucus is getting a bum wrap. Mucus is our friend, even when you have a runny nose. Proteins in your mucus called mucins create a barrier against pathogens that might seek to infect your body. What else does mucus do? Check out this video from TED-Ed to find out, and maybe say a little thank you next time you throw away a tissue. A catcher makes the most perfect throw

Baseball requires so much coordination that it’s a miracle anyone can successfully play a single game. This game consists of one of the smallest balls in sports being tossed, caught, and smacked with a narrow piece of wood. Considering how much purposeful precision it takes to play a game, this little fluke shouldn’t be that surprising. Read more: http://www.wimp.com/a-catcher-makes-the-most-perfect-throw/

Ellen DeGeneres Gives A Generous Gift To A Deaf Woman Who Can Finally Hear Thanks To Modern Medicine

When she was 29 years old, Sarah Churman experienced a small miracle of sorts. Sarah is part of the 0.38 percent of the American population that suffer from hearing impairment. She was born deaf but, thanks to modern medical technology, was fitted with a special hearing aid that finally allowed her to hear. Although she’d had hearing aids of one kind or another since age 2, those previous models only allowed her to catch a few faint vibrations or really loud noises. The newer implant, called the Esteem Inner Ear Simulator, allowed her to hear the world the same way that most of take for granted. Sarah’s reaction video to having her implant switched on was a huge viral hit, and ended up getting her an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. When Ellen learned that Sarah’s mother-in-law, Lari, had helped Sarah get the $30,000 needed for her hearing aid by cashing out her own retirement, she did what she does best – stepped in to save the day. Elephant Falls Asleep After Soothing Lullaby From Caretaker

Elephants are commonly referred to as “gentle giants.” These majestic beasts are the largest land animals in Asia. Asian elephant, Faamai, is the epitome of a “gentle giant.” While some of us need expensive white noise machines or the soft glow of a TV screen to fall asleep, Faamai just needs to hear her favorite lullaby. At her home in Thailand’s Elephant Nature Park, this sweet pachyderm loves nothing more than her caretaker, Sangduen “Lek”, Chailert’s voice. You can tell she and Faamai have a special bond when Lek starts singing the elephant’s favorite lullaby. After just a few seconds of singing, the elephant pulls her friend in closer with her trunk. A few more bars, and she is on the ground, slowly dozing off for the ultimate cat nap. Faamai was born in the ENP in 2009 and known to be curious and gentle. Since 1986, Asian elephants have been classified as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Poachers, habitat destruction, and other threats are leaving these animals’ lives at risk. The ENP is home to more than 35 Asian elephants, including Faamai, who have been rescued from abuse. The park provides a natural environment for elephants, dogs, cats, buffaloes, and many other animals at various projects across Thailand, Cambodia, and Myanmar. Watching Faamai soak up her caretaker’s beautiful song, it’s hard to imagine how anyone could harm such an adorable girl. Don’t forget to SHARE this adorable video with your friends and family. State Troopers Surprise Boy For His Birthday

What did you want to be when you grew up? Not too long ago, most kids might answer that question with police officer or firefighter. These days, professional athlete tops the list. Police officer is still in the running, but only for about 1.5 percent of the kids in America. That’s still pretty good, though, and puts it well above some other answers from a recent survey, such as mattress tester, ninja warrior, and kitty cat. A story like this might just get a few more kids on board. At the very least, it’s definitely sold one kid on the matter already. Angela Andrews’ son, Toxey, like so many kids, was feeling pretty let down by the response rate on his birthday invitations. Specifically, nobody was coming to his party. This is hard for a child, as you might imagine. Angela posted about this sad occurrence on Facebook, probably just to vent. She didn’t expect it to go as far as it did. A huge number of people saw the post and shared it. Eventually, one of these shares found its way to an Arkansas State Trooper. He contacted some of his fellow officers and they got to planning. It’s hard to believe this smiling face went through such an unpleasant experience. When his mom found out, she took to Facebook, mostly just to get some frustrations out. It turned out her plea, to nobody in particular, did not fall on deaf ears. (deployads = window.deployads || []).push({}); Just two days later, Cpl David Frothman and troopers Terry Sawyer, Kyle Sheldon, Brandon Cook, and Tim Callison arrived at Angela’s front door and inquired about Toxey. At first, the family was a little nervous. Then they found out exactly why these state troopers had turned up on their doorstep. It was for Toxey’s birthday! He got a cookie cake! And the troopers all brought him some pretty awesome presents. He even got to wear a real state trooper hat, ride in the car with the siren on, and hang out with a real live police dog. Suffice it to say, Toxey had pretty much the best birthday a 10-year-old could hope for, thanks to the selfless generosity of four kind-hearted men in uniform. It’s a different kind of heroics than people usually associate with the police, but it’s every bit as important. As Toxey’s mom, Angela, said, “They made this sweet baby’s day, his year! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will never be able to repay the kindness you showed my family today!” Don’t forget to SHARE this heartwarming story with your friends and family!
