Everyone loves birthday traditions. As their way to celebrate, these two couples enjoyed spending time together on the Gulf of Mexico doing some fishing. They never expected to haul in this cute catch; a Jack Russell Terrier! The four friends were out in the Gulf about five miles from shore. One of them, Bruce, noticed something in the water. As they steered the boat closer they realized it was a dog in a life vest! When the little guy noticed the boat, he began to swim toward them. Once the couples had the pooch aboard, they radioed the Coast Guard. They learned that this small family pet had been lost-at-sea for almost three hours. It seems the owner had needed to go below deck and, when he returned, his beloved friend was nowhere to be found. The owner stated, “I had given up.” Back on land, this party of birthday celebrants got to give a gift, instead of receiving one. They were greeted by shouts of “Jagermeister!” Judging by the joyous reaction of their furry first-mate, they decided that must be his name, and the man screaming it, his owner. (deployads = window.deployads || []).push({}); The two were quickly reunited, and it was truly a celebration. Jagermeister’s owner, Shawn Sahr, shared, “…it’s my baby, and I’m just so glad!” Thanks to a caring group of people being in the right place at the right time, and to the owner placing his pup in a life vest, this story has a happy ending. As the summer approaches and water sports become more accessible, this story reminds us all to look out for the safety of all those we love – especially the four-legged ones. Survivor. Patriot. Grandmother. Three words we don’t often associate with each other. Usually, the first two words move us to think of soldiers or other heroes in our community. However, there are many people who fit those descriptions, despite their appearances. Such is the case for Hermina Hirsch. As a resident of Czechoslovakia when the Nazi regime was attempting to complete their annexation of many areas, Hermina was captured and moved between several concentration camps, including Auschwitz. Fortunately, she was liberated in 1945. Following her release from recovery, like many Holocaust survivors, she moved to the United States. She found freedom and safety in her chosen city of Detroit. She was extremely grateful for her survival and for the country that had offered her a second chance. It should not be a surprise, then, that she cherishes the song “The Star Spangled Banner.” After her experiences as a young woman, the lyrics, which tout bravery and patriotism, have a deep meaning. So, when she got around to telling her sons that she would love the chance to sing the United States’ national anthem before a Detroit Tigers game, they knew they had to make it happen. When asked about her experience, Hermina said with a smile, “At my age, I figure this would do it. I don’t want to die before I sing at a baseball game. If I lived through the concentration camp, it couldn’t be that bad.” She made her appearance and every citizen should take note of her pride in her adopted homeland. It’s that time of year when the weather is simply unpredictable. Where I live on the East Coast, we’ve seen everything from snow flurries to sunny skies and high seventies in the past week! Every day is a gamble – will I be wearing a winter coat or flip-flops? Soon, spring will be here in full force and we’ll all be able to reorganize our closets, but, until then, it’s best to keep all types of garments on hand. When it comes to unpredictable weather, though, nothing can top this next video of an intense hail storm in Oklahoma City. In the world of viral videos, it’s an “oldie but a goodie,” and has been viewed over six million times since it was uploaded by beatlesfanxxl in May 2010. No matter how many times we’ve seen it, we can’t get enough of what happens to the pool just after the one-minute mark. While the folks behind the camera later apologized for their many exclamations throughout the video, it’s plain to see why they were all in shock. In fact, hail often catches people quite off guard. It forms when storm updrafts are strong enough to carry raindrops to an altitude with freezing temperatures. As these droplets travel, however, they become heavier, and eventually can no longer be supported by the updrafts. When that happens, they fall back to Earth as hail, some as small as a penny, others as large as a grapefruit. The unpredictability of spring weather that I mentioned earlier can create the perfect conditions for hail storms, so if you sense one brewing, seek cover immediately.
