Last Thursday, millions of people celebrated Thanksgiving and reconnected with family near and far. For those of us with family members who live close by, it’s easy to take these holidays for granted. We’ve fallen into a rhythm year after year where we see the same people, eat the same food and crack the same old jokes. Some families, however, have members whose location prevents them from joining everyone else. 

This, unfortunately, was nurse Tammy Smith’s reality for the past two years. Her son Brandon has been away serving in the military, leaving an empty seat at all family gatherings. Tammy and her husband had no idea that their Thanksgiving was about to change in a big way when one young man with a familiar name showed up in the ER.
