It’s that time of year when the weather is simply unpredictable. Where I live on the East Coast, we’ve seen everything from snow flurries to sunny skies and high seventies in the past week! Every day is a gamble – will I be wearing a winter coat or flip-flops? Soon, spring will be here in full force and we’ll all be able to reorganize our closets, but, until then, it’s best to keep all types of garments on hand. 

When it comes to unpredictable weather, though, nothing can top this next video of an intense hail storm in Oklahoma City. In the world of viral videos, it’s an “oldie but a goodie,” and has been viewed over six million times since it was uploaded by beatlesfanxxl in May 2010. No matter how many times we’ve seen it, we can’t get enough of what happens to the pool just after the one-minute mark. While the folks behind the camera later apologized for their many exclamations throughout the video, it’s plain to see why they were all in shock. 

In fact, hail often catches people quite off guard. It forms when storm updrafts are strong enough to carry raindrops to an altitude with freezing temperatures. As these droplets travel, however, they become heavier, and eventually can no longer be supported by the updrafts. When that happens, they fall back to Earth as hail, some as small as a penny, others as large as a grapefruit. The unpredictability of spring weather that I mentioned earlier can create the perfect conditions for hail storms, so if you sense one brewing, seek cover immediately. As you’ll see, they are a serious force of nature.
