A Guitar Made From An Old Skateboard

Hector Tepuy is a talented musician, artist and machinist. He’s also somewhat of a skateboarding enthusiast by the look of it, at least enough to be inspired to transform one into something totally unexpected. He calls it a “Lap Skate Guitar,” a play on “lap steel” which is what the flat-lying, slide operated guitars it was inspired by are commonly known as. The guitar is fully functional and sounds great as he plays it. Tepuy says that it “combines skateboarding with music into one sliding experience.”

Lap steel guitars are popular in country, Hawaiian and bluegrass music due to the soft, mellow tones produced by the metal slide. These guitars are played in a seated position most of the time, similar to playing a keyboard. They are also tuned differently than a standard guitar tuning. While standard guitars are tuned E-A-D-G-B-e (low-high), lap steel guitars are generally tuned to an open chord such as D , where the guitar is tuned D-A-D-F#-A-D.
