“Granny Pods” Just Might Replace Nursing Homes In The Future
Modern medicine is a beautiful thing. With all the advancements in healthcare, people can survive illnesses and injuries in a way that would have been unimaginable even just a century ago. That means not only a better quality of life for human beings, but a longer average lifespan as well. While this is clearly a triumph, it’s also led to the rise in the likelihood of spending a sometimes significant amount of time in a nursing home, which often comes with a similarly significant financial burden. Aside from a financial burden, elderly people report higher-than-average levels of loneliness and isolation, which can wreak havoc both mentally and physically.
Enter MEDCottage, a company that aims to realize a vision of family-managed healthcare. The MEDCottage, like the one in this video, “is a mobile, modular medical home designed to be temporarily placed on a caregiver’s property for rehabilitation and extended care. Simply stated, it’s a state-of-the-art hospital room with remote monitoring” which enables elderly or sick relatives to stay with family instead of being stuck in an impersonal senior or care facility. There are three different models to chose from, ranging in size from around 300-600 square feet. They are connected directly to the existing utilities of the main home on the property and include everything needed for an assisted living experience.
These cottages do come with a cost, of course. The Classic, the model seen in this video, clocks in at 288 square feet and runs $53,750, per MEDCottage’s product listing. The basic model, with an extra ten square feet, is more of a studio setup (without a separate bedroom) and costs $39,625. For $61,125, you can upgrade to the Grand and get over double the square footage and have more space for caregivers.
