Man Cave, Meet “The She Shed”
We all need time to ourselves. Even the most social person, with a phone full of Facebook updates and texts messages, enjoys stepping away from it all, taking a deep breath, and clearing their head. Maybe you like to read a book or write in a journal, or perhaps quietly meditating is more your speed. No matter what you do during your alone time, it’s important to have a space that is just for you. That’s right, just like Superman had the Fortress of Solitude, we all need a location where we’re free from the stress and distractions of the outside world. This can be as simple as closing your bedroom door, or as extravagant as what Sandy Foster did with an abandoned cabin on her property.
On a remote mountain road, nestled deep within the many acres of land she and her husband own, lies Foster’s “She Shed.” She got the idea when she discovered an old, abandoned cabin in the woods near her house. Inspired by the recent trend of “Man Caves,” Sandy set out to transform the structure into a place where she could relax on her own.
Other women, as well as psychologists, have spoken out in support of She Sheds. Barbara Teckles, a fellow She Shed owner from Wisconsin, says that “If women can find a spot of their own to collect themselves again and have some peace and quiet, everybody’s gonna benefit from that.” If a She Shed sounds like something you want in your life, check out this list of some of our favorite She Sheds for inspiration.
