Here at Wimp, we love a good rescue story. Whether it’s a sweet baby elephant or a poor, neglected pup, seeing animals successfully travel the road to recovery is beyond heartwarming. So, when this video begins with the image of a lifeless, frozen cat, our stomachs were simply in knots. Luckily for us (and Elsa!), this story has the happiest ending imaginable.

Obviously, the best case scenario would be that animals never end up like poor Elsa here. While that’s probably unlikely, it’s key to know how to best protect our beloved pets from cold weather. Exposure to the dry, cold air of winter and the chilly rain that can often accompany the cold, along with sleet and snow, can result in chapped paws and itchy, flaky skin. Luckily, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has some excellent tips for what to do with our animals during winter. 

When it comes to your home, keep it humidified to prevent itchy skin caused by going back and forth between the outside cold and the dry heat of indoors. Towel dry your pet, especially his paws and in between his toes, immediately once inside if necessary. As for grooming, never shave your pet to the skin during cold months. If he’s naturally short-haired, consider getting him a sweater to keep warm. Before heading out for a walk, grab a towel to occasionally clean off irritated paws and consider applying a coat of petroleum jelly to protect paw pads before even leaving the house. Above all else, keep an eye on your pet to make sure he doesn’t accidentally ingest antifreeze. This is a lethal poison and can’t be tolerated in any amount.
