Time For Bed!

Everyone has their own unique bedtime routine. When we were kids, our parents would tuck us in, read us a story, check for monsters under the bed, and say “goodnight.” But, as we got older, we started to develop our own way of doing things before bed. Maybe you still read, replacing the picture books with novels, or maybe you scroll through Facebook on your phone until you crash. Whatever you do, it’s nice to have something to help you wind down and let your body know it’s time for bed.

The family in this video loves watching television before bed each night. In fact, it’s become such a set part of their routine, that even the family dog knows what to do when they turn off the TV. As soon as his owners power down whatever program they’re watching, this big dog hops up and leaves the room, presumably to settle down for the night himself. This is a great example of “Classical Conditioning,” as was demonstrated in the case of “Pavlov’s Dog.”

For those of you who don’t remember, Pavlov’s Dog sought to prove how individuals could develop specific reactions to various stimuli. In his experiment, Ivan Pavlov rang a bell and then fed his dog. After a few repetitions of this, he found that his dog would begin salivating as soon as it heard the sound of the bell. So, his dog had come to associate the sound of the bell with being fed. While Pavlov’s dog was exhibiting similar behavior, we can only assume he wasn’t anywhere near as cute as the dog in this video!
