It’s a gas! It’s a liquid! It’s a solid? When a substance reaches its triple point, like the unknown material in this video, it can undergo an identity crisis. In this state of confusion, it coexists as a gas, liquid, and solid at the same time. In order for this scientific phenomena to happen, a low temperature and pressure must be just right. TOK Baseball App Brings Voice to the Second Screen

Second-screen apps are all the rage among sports-minded entrepreneurs these days, but the startup TOK.tv thinks it’s set itself apart with an offering that focuses on voice, not text. Its first product, TOK Baseball for iPad, just went live in the App Store. TOK Football is set for release after the World Series concludes, and other sports will follow before the company looks to expand to other markets. Here’s how TOK Baseball [App Store link] works — or rather, how it doesn’t: unlike most second-screen apps for sports, you don’t simply get live updates while exchanging text-based messages with friends or consuming tweeted commentary from the world at large. Instead, TOK Baseball uses second-screen technology for what’s in some ways a more traditional experience. After downloading the free app, you can invite up to three friends to join you in TOK Baseball for a specific game. Once that happens, your iPad will display live-updating stats for whichever game you watch, while enabling you to talk to one another in actual verbal conversation. All current games are displayed on a map (see photo above), so you can all switch over to receive updates and shoot the breeze over a different game, or one person can move back and forth between multiple hangout sessions. A set of built-in sound effects let you augment your trash talk or celebrations. TOK.tv founder Fabrizio Capobianco believes his app solves two key deficiencies for sports fans at home: TV doesn’t provide a constant stream of statistical updates, while texting with different groups of friends who can’t make it to your couch in person lacks the immediacy and excitement of actual conversation. “The idea came from the fact that I watch a lot of baseball alone at home with my dog,” Capobianco says. “It always felt a bit pathetic to be watching baseball alone and screaming ‘homerun!’ by myself while the dog looks at me with a strange face. And I want to scream, ‘homerun!’ and not have to take the time to type it out.” Capobianco is right that a simple, voiced-based approach gives TOK Baseball — and his company’s future offerings — an interesting counterpoint to the second-screen apps fans are used to being pitched. Hong Yi started out as a simple artist with a YouTube channel. Hong Yi, known as Red to most, likes to paint. However, she doesn’t like to paint with a paintbrush. Instead, Red finds different ways to create her beautiful artwork. In one of her first paintings, she used a basketball to create the image. Now, she is using something else to create an incredible portrait (for someone you’ll recognize). This is Hong Yi, known as “Red.” Hong Yi – Red Red is both an artist and an architect. Hong Yi – Red Jackie Chan’s art director contacted her, hoping to commission her to make something for Jackie’s 60th birthday. Hong Yi – Red She decided to make a portrait… Hong Yi – Red But it was unlike any you have ever seen before. Hong Yi – Red It was made entirely out of chopsticks. Hong Yi – Red Jackie had always been supportive of her work. Hong Yi – Red He saw her other portraits using unique mediums, like socks or coffee rings, and was entranced. Hong Yi – Red So, Red was hired to create his 60th birthday portrait. Hong Yi – Red She spent a month collecting 64,000 chopsticks, in Zhejiang and in Beijing Hong Yi – Red She tied the chopsticks into different bundle sizes with strings. Then, she hung them all from a steel frame. Hong Yi – Red Red presented the finished portrait at his birthday concert, in front of 10,000. And to think, she just started out with a YouTube channel, posting her work. Hong Yi – Red “It wasn’t easy to choose the material for Jackie’s piece. He is a world famous actor, an exceptional martial arts fighter, an environmentalist, and one of the most well-known faces internationally! I finally decided on chopsticks because Jackie had used them in some of the fighting scenes in his movies the Fearless Hyena and Karate Kid, and because chopsticks are Chinese. As he is also an environmentalist, I used disposable bamboo chopsticks to show that discarded materials can be reused and made into something meaningful and beautiful. While it might not be Adele, this a cappella theme song is pretty impressive. The video above — created by Nick McKaig, with some help from Trudbol — is 100 percent vocals and shaken, not stirred. For Marketers, ‘One-Size-Fits-All’ Doesn’t Fit in Latin America

Effectively scaling a brand in LatAm requires — at a minimum — a critical understanding of cultural nuances, a keen awareness of differences by country, knowledge of formality of tone of voice, and comprehension of the intricacies of each country’s legalese and history. Localized and even regionalized campaigns have proven successful in influencing LatAm markets, as evidenced by brands including McDonald’s, Coca-Cola and PUMA. McDonald’s: Showcasing local values Tip to learn from: Taking a regional approach and then localizing it even further, through content, is a powerful way to be impactful in overseas markets. McDonald’s serves more than 70 million customers in 119 countries, and a key contributor to the company’s global success is its understanding of each country’s cultural differences and needs. The brand places an importance on locally relevant marketing, menu innovations, service variations and sourced ingredients. For example, the menu in India features Masala Grill Burgers, and in Italy you can order a Mediterranean salad. Diverse initiatives across the globe, from “It all comes together at Macca’s” in Australia, to the “Just Because” campaign in neighboring New Zealand, showcase the brand’s regional values — and its marketing approach in Latin America is no exception. Basketball Star’s Insane Workout Will Make You Feel Weak

The college basketball season officially got underway this weekend with the start of fall practice, and University of Florida opponents should be very, very, afraid. The reason? Six-foot-nine, 249-lb. Patric Young, who spent the offseason doing the most hardcore workouts we’ve ever seen from a basketball player. As seen in the video above, those workouts included flipping giant tires, using rope to pull small cars while seated on the ground and pushing pickup trucks around campus with nothing but his bare hands. Young gave fans a look at his grueling 3-minute routine by using Twitter to share the above video during the offseason. The clip has bubbled up again on the social web over the past few days thanks to a mention in an SI.com pre-season power ranking, and with the start of college hoops season, it only seemed right share this with the non-sports world as well.
