The English singer-songwriter held off stiff competition from Eminem, who is Spotify’s all-time most-popular musician, Coldplay, Calvin Harris and Katy Perry. Perry, next year’s Super Bowl halftime show performer, dethroned Rihanna to become the top female. On Perry’s tail were Ariana Grande, Lana Del Rey, Beyoncé and Lorde. Sheeran’s sophomore studio album, x, also earned the title of top-streamed album, with 430 million streams since debuting at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart in June. He beat out Sam Smith, Iggy Azalea, Pharrell Williams and Grande. Meanwhile, over on rival Rhapsody, Sheeran was absent from the service’s top global artists, as Eminem, Drake, Katy Perry, Beyoncé and Rihanna came out on top in 2014. Musicians’ streaming stats have become more important than ever in terms of their success on Billboard charts. Billboard and Nielsen announced last month that they would alter the Billboard 200 albums chart to now include audio streaming data to rank the top albums, while also taking into account physical sales and paid downloads of albums and tracks. However, streaming services are also embroiled in controversy over artist royalties. Here’s a breakdown of the best of the best on Spotify: Top five global artists 1. Ed Sheeran 2. Eminem 3. Coldplay‘s beautiful “A Sky Full of Stars” song just got the wacky music video treatment. Unlike the levitation-infused music video for Coldplay’s previous single, “Magic,” this one shows the band sporting weird musical contraptions while marching through the streets of Sydney, Australia. The instrument-laden outfits are an odd juxtaposition with the track’s romantic lyrics (“‘Cause in a sky full of stars I think I see you. You’re a sky full of stars, such a heavenly view”). Regardless of the garb, front man Chris Martin looks happy, a welcome demeanor for fans, considering he and Gwyneth Paltrow split up “‘with hearts full of sadness” in March after more than 10 years of marriage. Director Mat Whitecross filmed and released the video swiftly, recording the footage on Tuesday after the band asked fans on Twitter to show up for the taping. We’re shooting the video for A Sky Full Of Stars on the streets of Sydney tomorrow. Does anyone want to be in it!? The Young@Heart chorus based in western Massachusetts is comprised of senior citizens ranging from their early 70s and beyond. Established at an elderly housing project in 1982, the program has given countless aging individuals an exciting, fun, and productive pastime to look forward to each day. During a performance in 2007, 83-year-old Fred Knittle stepped on stage to perform the lead vocal in their cover of Coldplay’s “Fix You.” Though he had retired from their group a few years before and was struggling with health issues, his incredible voice still managed to bring the house down. Prepare for your heart to melt. Sadly, Knittle passed away just two short years after this stirring performance. But thank goodness they captured this amazing moment so his legacy can live on. You can find more of the chorus’s beautiful renditions over on their YouTube page. Read more: http://www.viralnova.com/young-at-heart-fix-you/
