In a match made in movie trailer heaven, Disney villain Maleficent stalks victims as Lana Del Rey’s haunting vocals play ominously in the background. A 90-second trailer for the new movie Maleficent debuted during the Grammy Awards Sunday night, offering an extended sneak peek at the film. The movie features Angelina Jolie as the titular horned character and serves as both a prequel and retelling of the classic story of Sleeping Beauty, where the villainess will finally get to share her side of the story. Del Rey croons the classic Disney song “Once Upon A Dream” — the same song that appeared in the original 1959 animated version of Sleeping Beauty. Her haunting voice sets the tone for the movie, which promises to be be much darker than the original. Jolie perfectly fits the part of Mistress of All Evil, cracking wry smiles and generally looking foreboding. The film hits theaters on May 30. Universal Pictures released the first trailer for 47 Ronin on Wednesday, starring Keanu Reeves as “The One” — but in a very different setting. In the clip, viewers get a glimpse of Reeves as an outcast, slave and wild samurai warrior. The bearded, blade-wielding protagonist dodges fire face-first and goes head-to-head with a dragon (of sorts). 47 Ronin is based on an 18th-century tale of clan warfare and revenge surrounding a band of 47 loyal samurais, who are seeking vengeance after the murder of their master. The movie, directed by Carl Rinsch, also stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Tadanobu Asano. 47 Ronin premieres on Dec. 25. Creators of 2012’s Academy Award-nominated animation ParaNorman are teasing a new 3D stop-motion film, The Boxtrolls, in a trailer that emphasizes families come in all shapes and sizes. The movie appears to follow ParaNorman‘s footsteps by highlighting gay characters. Near the end of ParaNorman, the film reveals Mitch is gay. The revelation in a children’s movie angered some viewers, while others praised the inclusion. Unlike this new trailer for The Boxtrolls (watch above), trailers for ParaNorman didn’t acknowledge a gay character. “Sometimes there’s a mother, sometimes there’s a father, sometimes there’s a father and a father, sometimes both fathers are mothers,” explained the narrator of The Boxtrolls trailer. Other times, orphaned children, like the boy named Eggs in this movie, are raised by Boxtrolls — “underground cavern-dwelling community of quirky and lovable oddballs who wear recycled cardboard boxes the way turtles wear their shells.” The Boxtrolls is based on Alan Snow’s fantasy adventure novel Here Be Monsters from 2005. “The Boxtrolls is a visually dazzling mash-up of gripping detective story, absurdist comedy, and steampunk adventure with a surprisingly wholesome heart,” Travis Knight, CEO of stop-motion animation studio Laika, said when announcing the flick in February. The movie arrives in theaters in September 2014. “The Boxtrolls is a moving and human story with timelessness and powerful emotional resonance,” he added. “We’re thrilled to partner with Focus Features and Universal to bring this remarkable story to family audiences around the world.” BONUS: 9 Gay Leaders Making a Difference in Technology 9 Gay Leaders Making a Difference in Technology 1. According to Big Think, Sisson says being a gay entrepreneur can be challenging, but in his home of San Francisco, it’s a “non-issue.” “There’s never been any sort of problem with anyone finding out that I was gay and suddenly not wanting to do business with me or not wanting to fund me,” he said. In the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, sai-wielding Raphael gives his best Batman voice impression to scare intrepid reporter April O’Neil (Megan Fox) after she captures the secretive shell-clad heroes pummeling bad guys on her camera phone. Fans unlocked the film’s second trailer and four character posters (below) late Monday and Tuesday in an interactive “Turtle Reveal” Twitter stunt that required them to tweet hashtags — such as #TeamLeonardo — associated with each crime-fighting turtle. While the first trailer introduced us to storyline of director Michael Bay’s modern adaptation, this second attempt gives us a deeper dive into the plot involving the villainous Shredder. This reboot, which hits theaters Aug. 8, also stars Will Arnett as cameraman Vern Fenwick, William Fichtner as Shredder, Alan Ritchson as Raphael, Noel Fisher as Michelangelo, Jeremy Howard as Donatello, Pete Ploszek as Leonardo and Danny Woodburn as Splinter. Stanley Kubrick’s classic film 2001: A Space Odyssey set the bar for science-fiction films and is still influencing movie makers. But, what would the film look like if it was made today? Mashup master ChugsTheMonkey has remixed the film for fan site Film School Rejects as a Hollywood summer blockbuster. The two-minute trailer is filled with a heavy soundtrack and quick cuts — a big change from the slow moving and deliberate pacing of the original. Gone, too, is the famous Zarathustra soundtrack. The trailer does keep Kubric’s iconic flying femur scene. You can check out the trailer below. YouTube fans have chimed in with their approval of the trailer, but what do you think? If the action and gore in the summer flick The Expendables 2 was too much for a family night at the movies, leave it to Toy Story‘s Buzz and Woody to PG it up.
