Long before the iPod era, cassette tapes were all the rage. The ability to enjoy Hall & Oates while strutting the sidewalk in your new acid-washed jean jacket was nothing short of revolutionary. Now, obviously, that time has passed. M-I-E, an animation and design studio, created a video that pays special tribute to the cassette tape — both its life and eventual demise. The awesomely stylish video, titled “Jammed,” was made entirely using stop-motion and 3D techniques. It follows a View-Master-headed robot as it attempts to clean up an apocalyptic world taken over by tangled, cassette magnetic tape. Watch it for yourself above. Do you, or anyone you know, still kick it old school with cassette tapes? Read more: http://mashable.com/2012/11/27/cassette-video/
Lionel Messi of Argentina got the Golden Ball for best player of the 2014 World Cup, which ended Sunday in Brazil. Dazzling newcomer James Rodriguez of Colombia won the Golden Boot for most goals. And Manuel Neuer of Germany got the Golden Glove for best goalkeeper (all protestations that it should have been Tim Howard aside). But surely, given how much diving or flopping has become a part of the sport whether we like it or not, there should also be an official “Golden Dive” award handed out after the final whistle? Now there is, kind of, courtesy of a YouTube channel that claims to belong to the Diving Is Cool Society. The group of soccer fans count down their pick of the top 5 dives of Brazil 2014 — starting with the infamous flop by Fred in Brazil’s opening match against Croatia, a dive that won the host country a crucial penalty. Seasoned soccer fans won’t be surprised that the award goes to Dutch star Arjen Robben, for dives too numerous and exquisite to select just one. Robben freely admitted that he dived in the first half of the Netherlands’ game against Mexico (although he didn’t admit the dive that won one more of those crucial penalties in the second half). “One of the moments in the first half was a dive,” he told the Dutch TV station NOS. “Sometimes you get kicked, but that was not the case at that particular moment.” He said he regretted his decision to dive and called it a “silly action.” Arjen Robben, may you treasure this award more than the Netherlands’ third-place medal. It’s a gas! It’s a liquid! It’s a solid? When a substance reaches its triple point, like the unknown material in this video, it can undergo an identity crisis. In this state of confusion, it coexists as a gas, liquid, and solid at the same time. In order for this scientific phenomena to happen, a low temperature and pressure must be just right. Image: Triple Point Wikipedia Commons The phase diagram above shows the circumstances needed for these states to exist. The solid green line applies to most substances, and the dotted green line represents what is usually expected from water. BONUS: 10 ‘Cosmos’ Facts That Are Out of This World Mindblowing Cosmos Facts 1. We are made of stars. “They get so hot that the nuclei of the atoms fuse together deep within them to make the oxygen we breathe, the carbon in our muscles, the calcium in our bones, the iron in our blood. You, me, everyone: We are made of star stuff.” Image: Tumblr alwaysmoneyinthebnanastand 2. Our universe may be part of a larger multiverse. “Many of us suspect that all of this — all the worlds, stars, galaxies and clusters in our observable universe — is but one tiny bubble in an infinite ocean of other universes.” Image: Tumblr likeaphysicist 3. If we scaled the entire timeline of the cosmos to a calendar year, the entire recorded history of human life to present day would be 14 seconds. “Every person you’ve ever heard of lies right in there. All those kings and battles, migrations and inventions, wars and loves, every thing in the history books happened here in the last 14 seconds of the cosmic calendar.” Image: Tumblr ofalltime 4. Giordano Bruno had no scientific evidence to support his beliefs about the cosmos, but he was surprisingly accurate nonetheless. “Bruno was no scientist. His vision of the cosmos was a lucky guess because he had no evidence to support it. Like most guesses, it could well have turned out wrong. But once the idea was in the air, it gave others a target to aim at — if only to disprove it.” Image: No Homers Club pcarrion 5. Our solar system is surrounded by an icy shell of comets that’s imperceptible to us on Earth. “Each one of these little worlds is as far from its nearest neighbor as Earth is from Saturn” Image: Tumblr the-universe-unknown 6. Comets come from an Oort cloud, which is a mass of icy bodies on the outskirts of the solar system, and circle around the sun. “These are the snows of yesteryear. Drifting mountains of ice and rock, the preserved remnants of the birth of the solar system.” Image: Tumblr yesknopemaybe 7. Our eyes originally evolved to see in water, so we don’t see as well as we should. “When our amphibious ancestors left the water for the land their eyes, exquisitely evolved to see in water, were lousy for seeing in the air. Just hearing the James Bond theme song might bring back memories of classic films in the franchise — or get you excited for future ones, like Skyfall. While it might not be Adele, this a cappella theme song is pretty impressive. The video above — created by Nick McKaig, with some help from Trudbol — is 100 percent vocals and shaken, not stirred. Listen to the song and tell us in the comments which James Bond theme song is the best. BONUS: The 10 Coolest Gadgets in 50 Years of James Bond 10 Best Bond Gadgets Aston Martin DB5 (Goldfinger, 1964) The classic Bond spy car, the Aston Martin appeared in five films total. Its original incarnation included bulletproof panels, oil slick, smoke screen, machine guns, rotating license plates, tire slashers, a homing screen for tracking the bad guy, radar receiver, bumper basher and of course the passenger ejector seat. Attache Case (From Russia With Love, 1963) The first official Bond gadget, this case boasts two hidden rods of ammunition (20 rounds each), a three-piece sniper rifle, a concealed throwing knife and a disguised tear gas cartridge that incapacitates anyone who opens the case incorrectly. Golden Gun (The Man With The Golden Gun, 1974) Francisco Scaramanga’s weapon of choice was not a Bond gadget per se, but it represents the entire Bond series’ lavishness and violence, while also functioning as a pen and a lighter. Jetpack (Thunderball, 1965) The ultimate futuristic gadget/escape vehicle, jet packs are still just a dream almost 50 years later. Well, unless you have $100,000 or an iPhone. Lotus Esprit (The Spy Who Loved Me, 1977) It’s no Aston Martin, but the Esprit (pronounced Es-Pree) could drive underwater and featured a periscope, missiles, harpoons and mines. No word yet on whether the redesigned 2013 Esprit will have harpoons. Re-Breather (Thunderball, 1965 and Die Another Day, 2002) Two Bonds — Connery and Brosnan — used this gadget to breathe underwater like a Jedi. Die Another Day featured brief appearances of gadgets from throughout the Bond franchise, including that glorious jetpack. Bubble Suit (The World Is Not Enough, 1999) Q has a talent for predicting precisely what might go wrong on 007’s next mission. Not only is this inflating jacket the perfect tool for surviving an avalanche – it instantly provides a cozy, romantic bubble to set the mood. Ericsson Mobile Phone (Tomorrow Never Dies, 1997) Bond’s first true mobile phone could read fingerprints, pick locks, featured a remote control for his BMW 750iL, and doubled as a 2,000-volt taser. Still waiting on that app. Laser Wristwatch (GoldenEye, 1995) Bond has also rocked a magnetic watch, Buzz-saw watch, detonator watch, pager watch, explosive charge watch, liquid crystal TV watch and grappling hook watch. Laser Camera (License to Kill, 1989) Fires a laser when the shutter is snapped, and as a bonus, produces a photograph showing the skeletons of anyone in the frame. Still waiting on that app, too. The college basketball season officially got underway this weekend with the start of fall practice, and University of Florida opponents should be very, very, afraid. The reason? Six-foot-nine, 249-lb. Patric Young, who spent the offseason doing the most hardcore workouts we’ve ever seen from a basketball player. As seen in the video above, those workouts included flipping giant tires, using rope to pull small cars while seated on the ground and pushing pickup trucks around campus with nothing but his bare hands. Young gave fans a look at his grueling 3-minute routine by using Twitter to share the above video during the offseason. The clip has bubbled up again on the social web over the past few days thanks to a mention in an SI.com pre-season power ranking, and with the start of college hoops season, it only seemed right share this with the non-sports world as well. Check it out above and let us know what you think in the comments. Read more: http://mashable.com/2012/10/15/college-basketball-players-insane-workout-will-make-you-feel-small-video/
For Amos the cocker spaniel, life was rough. He had been living on the streets of Los Angeles for who knows how long, starving and afraid of anyone who tried to approach him. But luckily for him, help wasn’t far. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); }); When a homeowner called Hope For Paws and told volunteers that there had been a homeless dog living under the house next door for the last month, they drove there immediately and found him. Terrified, he refused to come any closer — but all they needed was a tasty cheeseburger and they were able to get him on the path to a better life. He is such a sweetheart at the end! Here’s hoping that Amos finds a home filled with love and endless belly rubs. If you’d like to help this wonderful organization save more lives, you can donate here.
