Wes Anderson Directs the New ‘Star Wars’

, , , , ,

Whether you’re excited about Star Wars: Episode VII or not, nearly all would agree that the upcoming director — whomever that might be — has some very high expectations to meet. Who do you picture the perfect director to lead the next generation of Star Wars fans? Is it Spielberg? Tarantino? Conan O’Brien picked Wes Anderson for the job during his show on Wednesday night — the latest in a series of hypothetical directors auditioning for the new Star Wars. Anderson is known for films such as The Life Aquatic, Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums, and has a very distinct aesthetic style. A Life Galactic — which is shown above, and obviously a parody — has many elements of Anderson’s previous films: Helvetica font, quirky decor and anticlimactic arguments. Sounds perfect for a scene as controversial as “Han Shot First,” right? BONUS: 10 Out of This World Star Wars-Disney Mashups Star Wars / Disney Memes Cool story, bro. How to Watch the Facebook Phone Event Online

, , , , , ,

Facebook is holding a highly-anticipated press event at its headquarters to reveal its “new home on Android.” Could we see a new Facebook-centric smartphone? If the rumors are any indication, definitely. The company will be livestreaming the announcement from its Menlo Park, Calif. office, and you can watch at Facebook Live, starting at 1:00 p.m. ET/10:00 a.m. PT. The Mashable team will also be on site, and we’ll be live blogging the event as the news unfolds. Follow along here. Rumors and leaks have been swirling about the Internet for awhile, pointing mostly to a concept of a HTC-built smartphone called Facebook First. Although it would have all the makings of a midrange smartphone — such as a 4.3-inch 720p display, a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 and so on — the software would be the star of the show (if, that is, the rumors are true). It’s possible we could see a Facebook operating system, powered by Android, with a news feed at the top of the lock screen. Other features would run throughout the platform. A recent FCC filing indicates the device would run on AT&T. The product announcement comes just months after Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said a smartphone has “always been the wrong strategy” for the company. What do you think Facebook will announce? Would you buy a Facebook phone? Let us know in the comments below. Image via iStockphoto, Franckreporter Read more: http://mashable.com/2013/04/04/how-to-watch-facebook-phone-online/

They’ve Been Searching For Her For Years. Did Investigators Just Find Her Body?

In May 2005, 18-year-old Natalee Holloway from Mountain Brook, Alabama, disappeared on a high school trip to Aruba shortly after she graduated. Her body was never found. She was last seen outside of a nightclub in Oranjestad, where she got into a car with local residents Joran van der Sloot and brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe. After she didn’t show up for her flight home on May 30, the three men were questioned. They claimed to have dropped Natalee off at her hotel and didn’t know anything else, but each man was arrested multiple times on suspicion of being involved in her disappearance. Though Van der Sloot was the main suspect, he and the others were never charged due to lack of evidence. Now Van der Sloot is in prison for the 2010 murder of Stephany Flores Ramírez in Lima, Peru. YouTube / Inside Edition Natalee’s case is still unsolved, but her father, Dave, has never stopped searching for her. YouTube / Inside Edition Now, 12 years later, human remains have been found in Aruba after an informant who lived with Van der Sloot has come forward and possibly revealed where Natalee’s body was dumped. 10 Sci-Fi Films About Mars You Can Watch Online

10 Sci-Fi Films About Mars You Can Watch Online 1. Mars Attacks! If you’re in the mood for a bizarre but hilarious black comedy, Mars Attacks! from director Tim Burton should fit the bill perfectly. Based on a trading card series from the 1960s, this B-movie parody features an all-star cast including Jack Nicholson, Lukas Haas, Annette Bening, Jim Brown, Pierce Brosnan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Glenn Close, Martin Short, Jack Black, Natalie Portman, Danny DeVito and Christina Applegate. Full of campy goodness, exploding landmarks, and Sylvia Sydney gleefully exclaiming “They blew up Congress!,” Mars Attacks! is definitely worth watching, and you can rent or buy it instantly on Amazon. 2. Total Recall One of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s many well-known roles is that of 21st-century construction worker Douglas Quaid, who discovers that everything he thinks he remembers about his life are all false memories that have been implanted in his brain. So of course (because this is Ah-nold we’re talking about), much violence and impressive stuntwork ensues, as Quaid travels to Mars to figure out who he is and why he has been living a false life. There’s a new remake of Total Recall coming out Aug. 3, so if you’d like to prepare by watching the original, you can see the trailer on YouTube and buy Total Recall to watch instantly on Amazon. 3. Red Planet With a stunningly low Rotten Tomatoes rating of just 14%, Red Planet isn’t exactly a marvel of modern cinema. It is, however, a mildly entertaining adventure movie about a group of scientists sent to try to colonize Mars as impending ecological disaster threatens Earth. The mission goes horribly awry, though, and becomes a fight for survival on the Red Planet. Amazon Prime members can watch Red Planet for free, and non-Prime members can rent or buy it instantly. 4. Ghosts of Mars Director John Carpenter is best known for science fiction horror movies, and Ghosts of Mars offers a lot of both. Unfortunately, it doesn’t offer any of it in a particularly compelling package, as evidenced by a paltry 21% Rotten Tomatoes rating and a $14 million box office gross (on a movie with a $28 million budget). But if you’re intrigued by a mash-up of supernatural and science fiction, you might still want to check out this story of hapless Martian colonists attacked and possessed by the ghosts of the planet’s previous inhabitants, released when miners discovered and opened a mysterious doorway. Watch it on Netflix or Amazon streaming video. 5. Robinson Crusoe on Mars Batman star Adam West, a monkey in a space suit, and aliens using humans as slave workers — this movie has it all. And, according to the trailer, it’s “scientifically authentic!” While they might have exaggerated a bit on that last part, it’s still a fun sci-fi romp that takes the adventure story of Robinson Crusoe and sets it on the surface of Mars, where Commander Kit Draper struggles to survive in the planet’s harsh environment and emerge victorious […]

He Died While Diving, And His Camera Was Running The Entire Time

, , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

On the coast of the Red Sea lies one of the world’s most infamous scuba locations, and it’s known locally as the Blue Hole. The Blue Hole is an underwater sinkhole that goes down about 96 meters (or 314 feet). It’s a popular spot for free diving, but it’s also earned a reputation as one of the most dangerous locations in the world. Despite regulation by authorities, about two divers per year are defeated by the sinkhole. The most famous death at the hole happened when diving instructor Yuri Lipski got lost back in 2000. Lipski foolishly decided to dive to the bottom of the hole on his own. Wikipedia He managed to reach a depth of 304 feet. However, at this depth, nitrogen narcosis began to impact his mental state, causing him to become disoriented. Wikipedia Once he realized that he would not be able to escape, Lipski removed his oxygen mask and quickly perished. Wikipedia When a diver was sent to retrieve Lipski’s body, they discovered that he had brought a video camera down with him. The camera attached to his helmet ended up recording the entire ordeal — including the moment of his death. The video below is not for the faint of heart. (via Reddit) That poor guy. I can’t even imagine how horrible his final moments must have been. Let this be a reminder to bring a buddy with you when you’re doing anything risky, no matter how skilled you are.
