Wimp Movie Night: Big Hero 6

Review:
Animated films often get a bad wrap as being just for children, but Big Hero 6 is closer to the grown up all ages entertainment of Pixar than your standard fluffy kids flick. Without falling victim to pop culture references or fart gags, the film builds a clever science fiction universe that’s equally heartfelt and thrilling. The film tells the story of Hiro, a young robotics prodigy who, following a tragedy, befriends one of his older brother’s robotic experiments. Together they fight a powerful super villain, save the world, and learn an important lesson on revenge.
It’s a standard action movie plot that rises above cliches thanks to a sharp sense of humor, thrilling action set pieces and a developed emotional center that will resonate with adults without traumatizing younger viewers.
The relationship between Baymax, a medical robot who’s unprepared for combat due to being a walking super durable balloon, and the mourning Hiro is a source of great comic relief and touching catharsis. It’s a rare feat for a film that features deadly nanobots to make you consider the memories that hold us close to loved ones we’ve lost in the past, but Big Hero 6 manages with flying colors. Then, right before things get too serious, it throws you an adorable robot playing with a cat.
As the story evolves, Hiro puts together a superhero team to fight the main villain, made up of his older brother’s friends from an advanced science academy. The group features characters across every gender and race without relegating anyone to stereotypes or forced romances. Unlike big budget noise fests like the Transformers films, Big Hero 6 perfectly meshes characters you care about with bombastic science fiction action. My wife and I are both in our thirties, with no kids, and had a blast visiting this universe.

Hiro is an orphan and experiences the death of another character as the film goes along. Death is a traumatic experience, but not in a way that will scare young children. The film’s battles between our heroes and the supervillain Yokai are intense, full of fire, explosions, and near death experiences, but are bloodless. Big Hero 6’s PG rating is entirely from the intensity of the action and thematic elements.

Will Adults Like It:
Yes. At the moment, the film holds an 89% Fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The mature handling of its darker elements creates a real world for viewers to dig into, full of betrayals, action, and stunning animation. With its slowly evolving plot and likable characters Big Hero 6 isn’t just a kids film, it’s a modern classic of the science fiction genre. If you were left underwhelmed by the wanton destruction of Man of Steel or Avengers: Age of Ultron, this superhero tale will be a refreshing change of pace.
