You might not know the name David Hahn, but back in 1995, his fascination with nuclear power nearly triggered a radiological disaster in his Michigan hometown. As a teen, Hahn became fixated with the idea of building a nuclear reactor in his mother’s backyard shed — and he actually got pretty darn close to accomplishing it. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); }); To amass the power needed for a nuclear reactor, Hahn took to scraping radioactive materials from common household items like smoke detectors. With his tools in hand, the kid began construction of his reactor. However, things did not go as planned (of course) and Hahn quickly tried to disassemble the reactor before it blew. Despite not creating the reactor, Hahn still managed to contaminate his mother’s yard with radiation. It was so bad, the EPA had to come clear it up. Here’s a mini-documentary looking at Hahn’s bizarre accomplishment. That is absolutely insane. Sadly, after his brush with nuclear greatness, life hasn’t been great for Hahn. Following a stint in the Navy and Marines, he was arrested in 2007. Police caught him trying to steal the smoke detectors in an apartment complex to amass more radioactive material for an unknown purpose. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me… Read more: http://www.viralnova.com/diy-nuclear-reactor/
Pretty much everything that can exist does exist in some form online. While this is exciting at some level, it’s also a terrifying prospect. Most of use aren’t disturbed enough to think of all the weird, crazy things that we sometimes encounter on the internet, but the many creeps who call the web home certainly are. And some sickos are a cut above the rest. Take, for example, a YouTuber who goes by Jake. Jake’s channel consists solely of disturbing black and white video sketches that seem to incorporate a dead body wrapped in a garbage bag. Saying that this footage is disturbing is putting it mildly. All of the short flickers of text that come across the screen in these videos don’t make them any better. One enterprising Redditor was able to piece together all of these texts. The result is actually a poem. Here’s a transcript: There was a lady all skin and bone; Sure such a lady was never known. It happened upon a certain day, this lady went to the church to pray. When she came to the church stile, there she did rest a little while; When she came to the church yard, there the bells so loud she heard. When she came to the church door, she stopped to rest a little more; When she came to the church within, the parson prayed ‘gainst pride and sin. On looking up, on looking down, she saw a dead man on the ground; And from his nose unto his chin, the worms crawled out, the worms crawled in. Then she unto the parson said, “Shall I be so when I am dead?” “Oh yes! Oh yes,” the parson said, “You will be so when you are dead.” Here the lady screams. This one might be the freakiest of all. (via Reddit) Well, I’m never sleeping again. I’d really like to know what exactly is happening in these videos and why, but I would settle for knowing whether or not that’s a real body. Most mothers would, and should, do anything for their children. When this Malaysian woman discovered that this man allegedly raped her 13 year-old daughter, she had to do something. She couldn’t stand idly by. So, she found a way to publicly shame the man that sexually harassed her daughter. We cannot condone violence, but seeing this mother stand up for her child is inspiring. Thousands of men and women are raped in the US alone every year… and our children are well protected. After learning that her daughter was allegedly raped, this Malaysian mother decided to pay the rapist back. It’s hard to say that a rapist wouldn’t deserve this public shaming. The video below is graphic. It’s what the mother did to the man she believed sexually assaulted her child. Most parents wouldn’t hesitate to do the very same thing to someone they thought abused their own… (H/T BuzzFeed) Violence is never the solution to our problems as a global community, but it’s easy to understand why this mother lashed out as she did. Rape and sexual assault are disgusting crimes. If this man did rape a 13 year-old girl, it’s hard to feel sorry for him. Read more: http://viralnova.com/woman-gets-revenge-rapist/
This onboard footage from a rally race in the mid-80s shows spectators standing incredibly close to the road, only just leaping out of the way as driver Walter Röhrl comes screaming past at scary speeds in his Audi Sport Quattro S1. In the 1980s de-regulation in some European countries opened the way for these crazy ‘Group B’ races, with some of the most exciting cars ever to hit the motorsport scene. Eventually the Group B races were banned because of both driver and spectator deaths. Nothing like it has ever happened since. People getting high isn’t exactly new. In fact, it’s nearly as old as time. That being said, if you thought contemporary drugs were bizarre, you’ll be pretty stunned when you see the crazy nonsense people used to do back in the day for a little lift. 1. U.S. soldiers used their guns to smoke weed. During the Vietnam War, soldiers often made makeshift bongs out of their guns. They also tried to get high on C-4, but they stopped when too many soldiers got sick. 2. Using laughing gas for anything but surgery. Wikipedia When laughing gas was first invented, it was seen as a gag and was used at house parties to get people laughing and having a good time 70 years before it was ever used in medicine. 3. Cannibalism. Yes, cannibalism. Wikipedia Throughout history, people have gotten spiritual highs on human flesh. Gross, right? From Mayans to Romans, plenty of people have chowed down on their brethren. Leonardo da Vinci was even on board! 4. Ladies who added cocaine to their tampons were high as kites. Wikipedia Because medicine has always been a patriarchal mess, doctors paid little to no mind to women’s ailments. To remedy that pesky period pain, they recommended that women throw some cocaine on their tampons before inserting them. Great idea. 5. Eating mold and riding brooms. British Museum Housewives during the Middle Ages got high by brewing ergot, which is a form of mold that grows on rye. In fact, the high they got from it was so strong that they felt like they were flying. That’s why we associate images of women flying on brooms with witchcraft! (via Cracked) Say no to drugs, friends. Getting high isn’t worth it…especially when it calls for eating human flesh. Read more: http://www.viralnova.com/high-on-history/
When it comes to ghost hunting, the most interesting spirits to track down are the angry ones. Sure, they might be capable of injuring you, but they also tend to be the most active. Take, for example, this footage from the 3 Girls In The Dark paranormal team. The group explored the famous Villisca Murder House in Iowa late last year and captured some bizarre footage. In 1912, the house was the site of a brutal murder that left all six members of the Moore family and their two young guests dead. It was after midnight when one member of the team recited the phrase that evidently inspired Reverend Lyn George Kelly to commit the murders. After the women said the phrase aloud, one of their cameras started shaking violently. That ghost wanted nothing to do with being taunted by the living. (source: Ghostsofbritain) It’s worth noting that even though Kelly confessed to the murders in 1917, he was never actually convicted. His case went to court twice, and both times, he was acquitted. The murders remain officially unsolved to this day. You can read more about the Villisca axe murders here. Read more: http://www.viralnova.com/angrier-ghost/
googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DTBT_ATF’); }); If there is one species that Earth’s oceans are abundant with, it’s jellyfish. Thanks to climate change and the general warming of the planet, our oceans are becoming a much more hospitable place for all sorts of jellyfish. However, there will always be those more mysterious and elusive sub-species. Consider the stygiomedusa gigantea. It is a species of giant jellyfish that is among the rarest in the world. Over the past 110 years, there have only been 115 sightings. According to those who have studied it, stygiomedusa gigantea is one of the largest invertebrate predators in the world. While its sightings have been rare, luckily a few of the recent ones have been by unmanned ROV vehicles, which allow us to get up close with these terrifying, majestic creatures. Well, this is going to give me nightmares for a year. Read more: http://www.viralnova.com/stygiomedusa-gigantea/
A group of brave YouTube pioneers decided to do an experiment that’d test the endurance of a favorite household appliance: the washing machine. They wanted to know just how far one of these puppies would go if you put it under some serious stress. The answer? Not that far. They put a small piece of metal, like what you’d find in a normal combustion engine, into the machine. Then, they started a cycle. At first, it seemed like the machine could handle it. But then, the wheels really came off of the whole operation when the machine tried to kick into a normal cycle. Check out the full carnage in the video: It’s just … So… violent. (H/T BuzzFeed) The next time you do a load of laundry, make sure to check your pants and bed sheets for any wrenches, engine parts or random hunks of metal. We all know how common it is to be carrying around a smelted brick of iron ore. If you thought that losing some change in the washing machine was loud and annoying, having this happen would break you (and the washing machine). In Australia, the seasons are reversed from the way we experience them here in North America. Now, as North America is preparing for the wonder that is fall, Australia is getting ready for spring. And what better way to kick off the season than by finding two male carpet pythons fighting each other right outside your window? googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); }); From the uploader: “Two male carpet pythons locked in combat outside the window after falling from roof on first day of Australian spring. My son and I watched with fascination and slight disgust, and unfortunately, he learned a few swear words.” Oh, that is the most terrifying thing ever. And remember, this is the just the start of spring. Imagine how many more horrible situations are likely to befall the maker of this video by the time summer rolls around? When it comes to home construction (or any kind of construction, really) safety should always be your primary concern. If you’re not taking steps to ensure no bodily harm comes to you or those around you, then that’s just plain dumb. For example, one thing you should never do when building something is use your own hand as a hammer. I wish this was just a hypothetical, but sadly, it’s not, as you can see in the video below. It’s equal parts horrifying and impressive. Well that’s going to leave a mark. Hopefully he has really good health insurance and his employer is all paid up on their premiums!
