This Baby’s Life Was Saved Thanks To A Smartphone App.

, , , , , ,

Usually when you see a smartphone involved in a life or death situation, it’s the cause of the problem — but this time it was the solution. At a dance shop in Spokane, WA, clerk Leslie Reckord was told an infant was unable to breath and had started turning blue. A former lifeguard, she immediately called 911 and began attempting CPR. Two blocks away, volunteer EMT Jeff Olson was working on cars in his day job as a mechanic when his phone sent him a notification about the emergency taking place nearby. So he dropped everything, ran over, and saved the little boy’s life. Olson still seemed rattled while talking about his heroism to the local news afterward. Take a look. (via Business Insider.) I guess smartphones are more useful than just beating your high score on Candy Crush after all. Read more: http://viralnova.com/baby-saved-app/

A Surgeon Assaulted His Patient…The Reason Why Is Even More Appalling

Anytime you go in for surgery, there’s a chance you might walk away with complications…or worse. But when there was a payment dispute between a doctor and a patient in China, one woman received more hurt than she bargained for. The following video was taken at a hospital in Inner Mongolia, and it’s believed that it was captured in the gynecology unit. Allegedly, the woman was about to be operated on when the doctor asked for more money to complete the procedure. An argument started, the patient lashed out, and eventually, the doctor slapped the patient and forcefully restrained her. While it’s never okay to resort to violence, some are saying that the woman had every right. According to reports across the country, doctors are preying on patients and extorting them in their weakest hour, which is supposedly what happened in this woman’s case. Because of this and other factors like a growing upper class with very specific expectations, recent numbers show that Chinese patients are attacking their doctors more and more often. Jawbone Toughens ‘Up’ Bracelet for Extreme Punishment

, , , , , , ,

The Jawbone Up debuted last year with big ambitions: A bracelet-like device that you’d wear all the time, tracking how much you move and how well you sleep. Paired with an app, the Up helps you recognize patterns in your habits, empowering you to improve your health. One problem: It wasn’t built to withstand the punishment of being a wearable device. Unlike a cellphone that resides in your pocket or a bag, the Up wraps around your wrist, exposed to the world just as much as your skin is. Many users found it quickly malfunctioned, and Jawbone recalled the Up and issued refunds. After nearly a year of revamping and beta testing, Jawbone is releasing Up 2.0. Although it looks exactly the same on the outside, the internals have been thoroughly changed, built to a new strength that goes way beyond industry standards, the company says. For instance, Jawbone exposed the Up to various chemicals and solvents, tested it, then exposed it again and again. There were also many drop tests. In total, 2.9 million hours of testing went into the second version of the product, the company says. Now the new Up is here, selling for $129.99, or $30 more than the original (those extra man-hours don’t pay for themselves). It comes in three sizes and eight different colors. You can get one, starting today, at Jawbone’s website, the Apple Store, Best Buy and AT&T stores. We’ll have a review after we’ve had a chance to check it out for a few days. What do you think of the Up? And what would convince you to use it? Share your impressions in the comments. Image courtesy of Jawbone Read more: http://mashable.com/2012/11/13/jawbone-up-new/

When You See This 78-Year-Old Woman Lifting, It’ll Inspire You To Do SOMETHING

There are more than 30,000 gyms in America…but if you look around, you quickly realize that we’re not utilizing them to the fullest. According to a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, more than two in every three adults are considered overweight or obese. Roughly 80% of people who join a gym in January will terminate that membership within five months. It seems like people need motivation to exercise and get healthy more than ever. That’s where 78-year-old Shirley Webb comes in. The grandmother recently became a viral sensation when a video of her deadlifting 225 pounds was uploaded by her trainer. After watching this video, you’ll probably ask yourself, “What’s my excuse now?” Webb joined a gym two years ago when she realized that if she was on the ground, she couldn’t get up without some kind of crutch. She wanted to end that and by following the advice of her trainer, she has. (via ESPN) Webb has gone on to set records for lifting in Illinois and Missouri for her age and weight group. She also has no intentions to stop lifting. Go home and look at yourself in the mirror, get motivated, and follow in this woman’s footsteps! Read more: http://www.viralnova.com/old-lady-lift/

This Is What Even A Little Too Much Sun Can Do To Your Skin. Yikes.

, , , ,

Summer is a time to get out and enjoy the sunshine. While most of us know the importance of sunscreen and the danger over exposure can inflict, we still often let ourselves just shrug it off. It’s not like you got a sunburn, so you’re fine, right? Nope. As this video from artist Thomas Leveritt shows, that’s just not true. By asking strangers to pose in front of a UV camera, Leveritt reveals that there’s much more going on than we realize when we step out into the sunlight. You’re going to think twice before the next time you go out in the sun. (H/T: Gizmodo.) Imagine how much worse it would have been if he went to a tanning salon.  Share with your friends using the buttons below to make sure they stay safe and always remember sunscreen!
