Internet Explorer and Nokia Make Your Party Playlists Interactive

, , , , ,

We’ve all been to a party or barbecue where the music is just awful. And of course, being the polite guest that you are, you can’t just unplug the host’s smartphone and swap yours in for a better playlist. On a quest to save your sanity and make the music at your next gathering more interactive, Internet Explorer and Nokia launched a new music platform called Mix Party, making playlist creation collaborative. Here’s how it works: The host of the party can open Mix Party on his Xbox using Internet Explorer. Although the host needs an Xbox with Xbox Live subscription, anyone with a smartphone can play along. First, download the accompanying smartphone app, which requires scanning a QR code to join the Mix Party. Then vote on which songs to play next. The service is free through the month of July, and at the end of the offer, you will be prompted to sign up for Nokia Music, an ad-free service that launched in September 2012, exclusive to Lumia smartphone users. The concept actually builds off Nokia Music, which lets you to download up to four one-hour music mixes. Users can upgrade to the platform’s unlimited access plan for $3.99 a month, which gives Mix Party users access to Nokia’s full library, so you can hear any song at your next gathering. Nokia has been creeping further into the music game over the past year. The mobile manufacturer has also built Nokia Mix Radio, a free service that lets you skip songs and save playlists for offline use (like when you’re underground on the subway). What creative ways do you manage playlists at parties? Let us know in the comments below. Image via Gilles Mingasson/Getty Images Read more: http://mashable.com/2013/07/02/nokia-mix-party/

Your Predictions for the 2014 Grammy Awards

, , , , , , ,

Macklemore, Daft Punk and Lorde could all win big at the 56th annual Grammy Awards.Image: Jonathan Leibson/Getty Images Entertainment; Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images Entertainment; ROBYN BECK/Getty Images On Sunday night, millions of viewers will watch the 56th Grammy Awards to see which superstars receive the biggest honors in music. While much of the night’s entertainment will come from commenting on red-carpet outfits, and wondering if any performance will make more buzz than Miley Cyrus’s VMA performance last year, the Grammys are ultimately about who wins. While there are 78 total Grammy awards, viewers generally agree that the big four are Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Record of the Year. Throughout the week, we asked Mashable readers to vote in polls, and predict who they think will win Grammys for the four major categories. Based on the results, here are the artists you expect to win big on Sunday. Best New Artist Rap artists Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis boast seven total nominations each tonight, which suggests they’ll be strong contenders in the Best New Artist category. However, Ed Sheeran already has one Grammy nomination under his belt for his 2011 hit “A Team,” and James Blake and Kacey Musgraves have strong followings in the indie and country-music communities, respectively. While there’s a case to be made for each artist, your top pick to win Best New Artist was: Community Prediction: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (42%)Runner-up: Kendrick Lamar (26%) Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are your Grammy pick for Best New Artist. Image: Ari Perilstein/Getty Images Entertainment Song of the Year While pop stars Pink and Katy Perry have received double-digit nominations over the years, this is the first time either of them is up for Song of the Year. Bruno Mars has previously received Song of the Year nominations for “F*ck You” (as a songwriter) and “Grenade,” but he has yet to take home an award. While these pop veterans have experience on their side, Lorde’s “Royals” is up for three Grammys tonight, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Same Love” will no doubt be a contender for its positive lyrical message and catchy hook. It’s a tough one to call, but your clear prediction for who will get the nod is: Community Prediction: “Royals” by Lorde (47%)Runner-up: “Same Love” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (19%) “Royals,” by Lorde, is your top Grammy choice for Song of the Year. Image: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Entertainment Album of the Year Both Taylor Swift‘s Red and Daft Punk‘s Random Access Memories enjoyed multiple weeks as the number-one album on the Billboard Top 200, which makes them strong contenders for Album of the Year. However, Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D City and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ The Heist feature at least three hit songs nominated in other Grammy categories, and Sara Bareilles’ The Blessed Unrest stands a decent chance, largely due to the popularity of “Brave.” While all of these albums performed well throughout the year, your opinion […]

Most People Don’t Know, But The Love Parade Disaster Was The Worst Thing Ever

, , , , , , , , ,

For many music fans, summer is festival season. There’s nothing quite like gathering with thousands of strangers in beautiful weather to take in some top-shelf tunes. However, those circumstances are also ripe breeding grounds for tragedy, especially when enclosed spaces are involved. We need only look at what happened during the 2010 Love Parade in Germany for proof of that… Since 1989, The Love Parade had taken place in Berlin. In 2010, the organizers attempted to hold the festival in a new city in the west, Duisburg. It was also the first time that the festival was held in an enclosed area. Wikipedia The capacity of the venue was limited to 250,000 people, but officials estimated anywhere between 200,000 and 1.4 million people were expected to attend. Wikipedia Entrance to the festival, which was held in a former freight station, was supposed to begin at 11 a.m. but ended up starting around noon instead. The supposed only way in was through an 800-foot-long ramp. However, police closed the tunnel because of overcrowding and attempted to announce over loudspeakers that newcomers should leave and use a different entrance. However, new people continued to pool into the tunnel causing a stampede. Twenty-one people were killed and 500 suffered injuries. The autopsies on all 21 bodies indicated crushed rib cages as the cause of death. Getty Images “I will never forget the sight. There were all these twisted-up bodies of those who had been crushed. They were lying at the tunnel exit. Their faces had all turned blue,” said one eyewitness who survived being trapped in the tunnel. Wikipedia A Redditor who was at the festival but got out in time described her experience like this: Getty Images It was “one of the most surreal experiences I ever lived through. Thanks to my experience I was able to get out at the peak. My friend was furious at me that I dragged her out and that I behaved the way I did. She thanked me when she saw the bodies lying down.” In response to the tragedy, the organizers of the Love Parade announced that they were retiring the festival. “The Love Parade has always been a joyful and peaceful party, but in future would always be overshadowed by yesterday’s events,” said organizer Rainer Schaller. Getty Images For a taste of what it was like in the final moments before officials began to clear the crowd, you can check out the video below. WARNING: It is very upsetting. I remember when this story broke. I happened to be studying in Germany at the time. It was surreal, to say the least. The only reason for these deaths was poor planning. Everyone was just there to have fun. Read more: http://www.viralnova.com/love-parade-disaster/

In Honor Of Bob Dylan’s Nobel Prize, Here Are 6 Dylan Songs Made Famous By Others

, , , , , , , , , , ,

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DTBT_ATF’); }); Bob Dylan’s lyrical prowess has never been kept secret or overlooked, and the Nobel Committee just honored the prolific singer-songwriter with the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature. While the win has kicked up some controversy in literary circles, it’s easy to argue that Dylan’s songwriting stands at the helm of his success. Very few artists adjust to the ebb and flow of musical tides quite like he’s done since the early ’60s. Fewer still pen lines that never lose their consequence or relevance in changing times. His strange, relentless cadence is instantly recognizable. His iconic tracks continue to fill coffee shops, ride on radio waves, and fly in the face of generational difference. But sometimes, mastery is found in the last place you’d think to look. To honor his Nobel Prize win, let’s leave no stone unturned. Here are six Bob Dylan songs made famous by other artists. 1. “Wagon Wheel” — Old Crow Medicine Show Dylan wrote what is now the chorus of this country-tinged favorite and ultimately scrapped it. Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show built it out with verses and released the final version of the track in 2013. 2. “The Mighty Quinn” — Manfred Mann Dyan wrote and recorded “The Mighty Quinn (Quinn the Eskimo)” in 1967. The following year, Manfred Mann released a cover that charted well in the United Kingdom. In 1970, the original version was added to Dylan’s “Self Portrait.” 3. “All Along the Watchtower” — Jimi Hendrix googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF’); }); Although Dylan’s original version is one of his most beloved songs, Jimi Hendrix gave it new life with his cover, which made it onto the guitar legend’s 1968 “Electric Ladyland.” 4. “Make You Feel My Love” — Adele Fans go crazy when vocal powerhouse Adele performs her rendition of “Make You Feel My Love,” but she always gives Bob Dylan due credit. He wrote the song in 1997. 5. “Love is Just a Four Letter Word” — Joan Baez Baez effectively helped Dylan get his career off the ground in the ’60s by covering his work, but this cover of “Love is Just a Four Letter Word” gained the most traction in 1968. 6. “Mr. Tambourine Man” — The Byrds While it’s one of Bob Dylan’s most popular songs, the track didn’t make it to number one on the charts until The Byrds covered it. That being said, both versions did receive Grammys. Read More: You’ve Heard These 10 Smash Hits, But Did You Know That Prince Brought Them To Life?
