Here’s How the President Sends His Tweets

, , , , , , , , ,

Ever wonder how the President of the United States uses Twitter? You can find out in the video above, shot during a Twitter Q&A that President Obama held after a campaign rally in Newton, Iowa earlier this year. “I’m the master tweeter,” exclaimed the President after typing the following tweet composed of exactly 140 characters — even though a shorter tweet is easier for others to retweet and is therefore considered preferable. His team celebrated the 140-character tweet as a “twoosh.” .@jwarner180 bio fuels, wind , solarall getting cheaper each year & oil getting more expensive. Why we need all-of-the-above strategy. -bo — The White House (@whitehouse) May 24, 2012 The tweets were sent from the official White House account — which just hit 3 million followers — and not any of the Obama campaign’s accounts. Obama used the Twitter town hall to answer questions on energy and other topics from a MacBook Pro. How should politicians use Twitter to engage with citizens? Dying Cancer Patient Turns to YouTube to Try to Meet Katy Perry

, , , , ,

In a series of YouTube videos, 20-year-old Anthony Harrison shares his battle with cancer and his wish to meet Katy Perry before he dies. Harrison explains in his videos that after an ineffective bone-marrow transplant, the doctors told him “there’s not much they can do,” and gave him months to live. Harrison created a YouTube bucket list that includes activities such as skydiving, taking a helicopter ride and riding in a hot air balloon. His list also included one very special item: to meet his “celebrity idol,” Katy Perry. Harrison, a musician himself, is a fan of Katy and says that she seems like “a great person overall.” The singer’s fanbase, the “Katy Kats” have latched on to the video and used Twitter and Tumblr to send the message to Katy herself. trend #KatyMeetAnthony he has cancer & his dream is to meet @katyperry & he only has a few months left to live, please! — Brooke Bennett (@brookeloveskaty) July 8, 2012 Katy Perry dedicated tumblr, iheartkatyperry, posted the video (which currently has 12,758 views) and is quickly attracting reblogs. Reddit user OliverBoj also posted the video to Reddit with the comment “If he’s real, he’ll appreciate the support. If he’s fake, we’ll leave that to 4Chan” — in reference to questions over the video’s authenticity. OliverBoj also posted these photos from Harrison’s Facebook in an effort to substantiate Harrison’s story. Katy Cats and supporters of Harrison are currently tweeting #KatyMeetAnthony in an attempt to catch the singer’s attention. ESPN’s ‘Social Highlights’ Mash Ups Show Big Moments From Fans’ Lens

, , , ,

The sports highlight is extremely predictable by now: an amazing play, sequence or moment is replayed from one or more angles, while a news anchor or announcer recaps what happened. Sometimes the video runs along with its original play-by-play audio, or maybe with the live radio call. But, in the age of social media permeation and mobile video proliferation, this is no longer enough, according to UNITE, a new late-night show that airs on ESPNU. The social media-heavy show has introduced a regular installment called “social highlights,” which leverage just how much video modern fans shoot on their smartphones while at the game. The idea is simple, but pretty powerful. Footage from commercial TV broadcasts and radio audio clips are edited together with video fans get from the stands and share to Twitter or YouTube. The result? Immersive highlights of major sports moments. “We wanted to find a way to find a different side of what a highlight is, something you wouldn’t normally see unless we aggregated the videos and put them with some high quality production,” UNITE producer Yaron Deskalo told Mashable. The example above shows the final outs of Seattle Mariner Felix Hernandez’s perfect game in August. More recent examples include the controversial ending of the Packers-Seahawks NFL game in September and North Carolina State’s last-second touchdown to beat Florida State last weekend. Deskalo produced one similar video while working on an E:60 production for ESPN a couple years ago, which planted the seed for UNITE’s social highlights. Today, however, there are few if any other examples of networks consistently producing installments that combine professionally edited broadcast highlights with fan-sourced video. The social highlights air on UNITE weekly, then go up on YouTube if ESPNU has rights to the broadcast clips used. Some have even made their way on to ESPN and ESPN2. UNITE producers scour YouTube for fan video then incorporate between five and 10 into each highlight after obtaining permission from the amateur shooters. While the resulting clips currently air primarily on a late-night show on a station that few but the most hardcore sports fans regularly watch, it’s not hard to imagine similar highlight packages becoming more mainstream sooner than later. “People are going to to able to film at these games more and more, and if we can find a way to get them to us, we’ll be able to find new ways to tell these stories,” Deskalo says. “We’re not there just yet, but I think in the next couple years we’ll start to see more social video elements in regular highlights.” Would you like to see this trend catch on — or do you prefer the traditional highlight format? Congressman Vines Vote Against Anti-Abortion Bill

, , , , , , , , , , ,

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) wanted to make a big impression when he voted against a controversial bill to make it more difficult for women to have abortions. He Vined his “nay” vote, making him most likely the first member of Congress to do so. Swalwell was protesting a bill called the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. It would ban abortions after a fetus is 20 weeks old, and is based on the idea that fetuses can feel pain earlier than previously thought. On Twitter, Swalwell posted that the bill was part of a “war on women.” Of the Vine, he said, “When House @GOP try to roll back health protections for women, this is how I vote.” The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act passed the House 228-196 Tuesday, with only 12 members of Congress breaking party lines: Six Democrats voted in favor of the bill, and six Republicans voted against it. There’s little chance of the bill actually becoming law. Even if it were picked up and passed in the Democrat-controlled Senate, President Obama has already promised to veto. He did not, however, stress his point in a six-second video with stuttering sound. Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire want to hear what you’ve got to say. The two stars unveiled a campaign on Monday called Vote4Stuff. It urges voters to use social media to talk about what issues are most critical to them in the upcoming election. A public service announcement went online Monday, asking: “What stuff is important to you?” Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jonah Hill, Zac Efron, Edward Norton and Ellen Degeneres — among others — also appear in the video. Anyone interested can submit their own 30-second video about their biggest concerns going into the election. The PSA mentions several potential issues to talk about, including jobs, marriage equality, foreign policy, immigration and education. But DiCaprio and the team are encouraging people to be creative. “Hey, knock us out and we’ll put (the video) in,” Norton says in the announcement. What issues matter most to you in this election? Reddit-Powered Travel Show Premieres on YouTube

, , , ,

Zach Anner’s Reddit-powered cross-country road trip is complete, and finally premiering on YouTube. The series, Riding Shotgun With Zach Anner, is a travel show that evolved from Anner’s former show on the OWN network. The comic won a contest after charming the online communities of Reddit and 4chan with self-deprecating humor that poked fun at his own affliction — cerebral palsy. Anner took to Reddit after the short-lived cable series was cancelled due to poor ratings. The new series is the first to have an official branded subreddit. With help from Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, Anner and his friends traveled to six cities, suggested by the Reddit community: Montreal, Boston, Baltimore, Blacksburg, Va., Savannah, New Orleans, Denver and Vancouver. After selecting the itinerary, the team sought out local redditors to give their take on each city. Throughout the six-week trip, the guys released teasers of the crazy antics to keep viewers updated on their travels. They did everything from reading romance novels at the filming location of Dirty Dancing to performing on Bourbon Street with the 610 stompers to drinking “dragon’s blood” in Montreal. The new series, which is hosted on YouTube, already has more than two million views and 25,000 subscribers. Anner will host a Reddit AMA on Tuesday at 11 a.m. EST to kick it off. Will you be tuning into Riding Shotgun With Zach Anner? Let us know what you think of the online-powered endeavor in the comments below.
