8-Bit ‘True Detective’ Solves Yellow King Case in 90 Seconds

, , , , , ,

Warning: This video is packed with spoilers. Matthew McConaughey’s pop culture renaissance wouldn’t be complete without a pixelated homage to his hit TV show, True Detective. The HBO series, which also starred Woody Harrelson, followed the detectives through a 17-year-long serial murder investigation that kept viewers on their toes and their Twitter pages. The first season concluded last weekend. If you haven’t had the time (or lack a friend with an HBO Go account) to figure out the identity of the Yellow King, this video condenses all eight episodes in just about 90 seconds. That’s almost less time than it takes to say “alright, alright, alright.” BONUS: An Emoji Guide to the 2014 Best Picture Oscar Nominees 2014 Oscar’s Best Picture Nominees in Emoji Gravity American Hustle Her Dallas Buyers Club The Wolf of Wall Street Captain Phillips Nebraska Philomena 12 Years a Slave Read more: http://mashable.com/2014/03/13/true-detective-8-bit/

McKayla Maroney Scowls Amiably For Stephen Colbert

, , , , ,

If there are any doubts that McKayla Maroney —the Olympic gymnast whose scowl spawned an Internet meme — is a good sport, she laid them to rest Thursday night with a visit to The Colbert Report. Maroney was presented as one of five new interns for Colbert — the other four being the rest of the gold-winning gymnastics team, Jordyn Wieber, Gabrielle Douglas, Alexandra Raisman and Kyla Ross. The five, who just returned from “some study abroad thing in London,” used their considerable athletic talents to deliver a pen to Colbert. Best of all, when the camera panned to Maroney, she acquiesced to fan’s desires by delivering her signature scowl. How do you rate this appearance? Gold? Silver? Sound off in the comments. Even Jon Snow Would Charleston to This Jazzy ‘Game of Thrones’ Theme

, ,

This post contains spoilers from Game of Thrones. Read at your own discretion. Cheer up, Jon Snow. This jazz band has just the thing to turn that frown upside down. The New Orleans-style jazz band Swamp Donkeys performed a funky version of the usually intense Game of Thrones theme song at B.B. King’s Blues Club in New York City on June 9th. According to the video, their upbeat rendition was dedicated to Jon Snow’s lost love, Ygritte. After fighting through the night, the Night’s Watch deserves a catchy tune to lift their spirits. Bloomberg Interpreter’s Swag Gives Her Overnight Internet Fame

, , , , , , , ,

Tension was high Monday night as New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg addressed Hurricane Sandy and its approach into the East Coast. For most viewers, though, it wasn’t the mayor’s speech that was most captivating — it was his sign language interpreter. The woman, later identified as Lydia Callis, was an instant hit across the web for her dramatic expressions and theatrical gestures during the speech. A flurry of tweets and a GIF-filled Tumblr quickly went viral as a result of the now pseudo-infamous interpretation. At first, Callis was mistakenly attributed as Lydia “Calas” — a Twitter handle and Tumblr page went up with the incorrect spelling — but a correction was soon brought public. Viewers across social media applauded her not only for her outstanding interpretations, but for giving everyone a reason to smile during a grim, stressful time. Hurricane Sandy will go down as one of the most expensive natural disasters in U.S. history, with estimates close to $20 billion. Here’s a bit of what the Twitterverse had to say: My mother-in-law, who is an ASL interpreter says @mikebloomberg‘s signer Lydia Callis is “amazing” and “crystral clear”. Animation helps. — Daniel Bentley (@DJBentley) October 31, 2012 No making fun of Bloomberg’s sign-language translator. Seriously. Only love. She’s doing her job both very well, and with STYLE. — Bruce Arthur (@bruce_arthur) October 29, 2012 I really want Lydia Callis (Bloomberg’s sign language interpreter) next to Charles Barkley on Inside the NBA. Can someone make this happen? — Dave Zirin (@EdgeofSports) October 31, 2012 Shush, everyone, Lydia Callis is signing. (Also, that Bloomberg guy is talking.) twitter.com/ditzkoff/statu… — Dave Itzkoff (@ditzkoff) October 30, 2012 Callis even passed the ultimate threshold for solidified Internet fame by getting a parody video dedicated to her shared on YouTube. Watch the video up top and try not to grin, at least a little bit. Did you see Callis in action? Tell us what you thought. Laverne Cox Shows Conan How to Fix His Whack Hair

It’s about time Conan did something with that hair. While prepping for a special appearance on his show from the cast of Orange is the New Black, Conan O’Brien got a special beauty consultation from Laverne Cox, who plays sassy hair stylist Sophia Burset on the Netflix show. Among Cox’s tips to Coco were to get a new dye job and ditch the Bozo the Clown look. Harsh. Conan also featured other members of the cast on different segments of his show, including how to make crazy eyes with Uzo Aduba and Orange is the New Black alternative credits. When it comes to hair color, it seems, orange is not the new black. BONUS: 9 ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Actresses In and Out of Character Orange is the New Black Characters IRL 1. New ‘Doctor Who’ Episode Reveals What Happened to the 8th Doctor

, , ,

Doctor Who fans got a surprise treat from the BBC Thursday as they wait for the 50th Anniversary Special later in November. The BBC released a special episode online that sets the stage for the special, and it brings back a star from the show’s past. Paul McGann, who starred as the Doctor in the 1996 Fox TV movie, returns to the role in a 7-minute mini episode called “The Night of the Doctor”, written by Who‘s current showrunner, Steven Moffat (the upcoming feature-length special is entitled “The Day of the Doctor”). Although McGann played the Doctor onscreen only once before, his Eighth Doctor was accepted into the show’s continuity, and he has lent his voice talents to several Doctor Who audio adventures produced by Big Finish. Earlier this year, McGann cleverly denied he was involved in the 50th Anniversary Special — which he technically still isn’t. But “The Night of the Doctor” finally gives fans some closure to his incarnation of the Doctor, and it helps that McGann has aged very well: He looks almost exactly like he did in the TV movie, shorter hair notwithstanding. 12 Most Essential Episodes of ‘Doctor Who’ Rose The episode that introduced a whole new generation to Doctor Who is amazingly well paced. Ordinary shopgirl Rose Tyler is slowly pulled into the exciting, fantastical world of the Doctor to help him battle evil mannequins controlled by something even more fearsome. “Rose” fully captures the wondrous appeal of traveling with the Doctor while serving up Who‘s best monster archetype: an ordinary object turned homicidal. Video: YouTube, VERITASERUMUK Dalek The Daleks are the undisputed champions of Doctor Who monsters, and this episode reminds us why by showing how dangerous just one of them can be. It’s the plotting human mastermind that’s keeping the Dalek prisoner who steals the show, however, inspiring some of the Doctor’s best-ever dialogue in this thrilling masterpiece. Video: YouTube, WhoniverseOnline The Christmas Invasion Regeneration? What’s that? Find out along with the Doctor’s friends what it means to have everything you thought you knew about someone suddenly change. “The Christmas Invasion” is a major turning point for the show, and not just because the Doctor has a new face — it’s the beginning of a new era in how the Earth deals with threats. As serious as all that sounds, the show’s first Christmas special is actually quite merry. Video: YouTube, vortexguyz934 The Girl in the Fireplace You could argue that other stories used time travel as a plot device better than “The Girl in the Fireplace,” but nothing has done it with more heart. A crippled starship opens a doorway through time that endangers a French girl, and the Doctor becomes an influence throughout her life in order to save her. But doorways swing both ways… Video: YouTube, WhoniverseArchive Army of Ghosts/Doomsday The Doctor’s greatest enemies are at their most formidable in this corker of a season finale. The guest cast is outstanding, and several story arcs conclude in epic fashion. […]

Hannibal Buress: The comic who came at Bill Cosby and did not miss

, , , ,

Hannibal Buress at the American Comedy Awards in New York City on April 23, 2014.Image: Brad Barket/Invision/Associated Press LOS ANGELES — It was the cultural equivalent of an action hero walking away from an explosion without looking back: Hannibal Buress has spoken his piece about Bill Cosby, and seems content to leave the billowing mushroom cloud behind. It is simply accepted as fact that Buress’ Oct. 16 standup routine was the tipping point in Cosby’s precipitous public downfall, an organically viral moment that, for reasons no one can quite explain, finally focused our attention on decades of sexual predation accusations while stirring up at least a half-dozen more. But if you thought the 31-year-old comedian would somehow seek to capitalize, or even continue to agitate for a reckoning with Cosby’s past, think again. Most comics toil their whole lives in relative obscurity, waiting for something they do or say to catch fire. Buress got his moment by way of a crude cell phone video. It’s a bit that Buress said he has done dozens of times over several months of public performances, but there was something about the timing of last month’s show in Cosby’s hometown of Philadelphia that piqued the Internet’s interest, emboldening more women to come forward and touching off a media firestorm. Since then, Buress has turned down dozens of interview requests, including one from Mashable. He has largely avoided the topic on his active social media channels, and has not revisited the Cosby situation, at least not in a performance caught on tape, in his 15 standup appearances since. Subtle clues in his Twitter feed hint that the Cosby story might still weigh on his mind, including this YouTube video (below) from Nov. 15, right around the time Cosby was refusing to address the gathering clouds during an interview with NPR. “People have been asking me to comment,” he wrote, then proceeded to “review” the Cracker Barrel meal that he and his crew ate while traveling between venues in an RV. But at about 3:15 in, Buress, who is waxing poetic about the $20 keyboard he just bought, says, “Sometimes we fail in life. That’s OK.” Then, a bleeped-out section. People have been asking me to comment. here it is. https://t.co/BZnZE7BMIZ — Hannibal Buress (@hannibalburess) November 15, 2014 “Delete, delete! That’s an edit,” someone says off-screen while the entire crew laughs heartily. Then, Buress: “That jump-cut is because we said something slanderous. And we won’t tell you who it is, but… don’t want to deal with that at all.” “That” could be any number of things, including pressure Cosby’s attack dog lawyer Martin Singer, or the inevitable blowback from members of the public who still support Cosby. In fact, a week later, Buress seemed to acknowledge just that. The only thing weirder than getting a death threat from a male bodybuilder/stripper on FB is seeing that you have one mutual friend. — Hannibal Buress (@hannibalburess) November 21, 2014 And then hitting that one friend up and […]
