Benny and Rafi Fine of the Fine Bros.Image: YouTube YouTube creators the Fine Bros. aren’t sweating the 66th Primetime Emmys, despite that they’re on the nomination ballots, which are due back Friday. Too busy cranking out three videos a week to think about much else. But if the makers of popular shows like Kids React sneak in, they’ll make history. SEE ALSO: The Path From YouTube to Movie Star Just Got Wider That’s because no native YouTube creator has ever garnered an Emmy nod — and by “native” creator I’m talking purely YouTube-first series, not associated with pre-existing brands or TV shows. Digital nominations have sprang from the TV ecosystem, but one’s come straight from the YouTube mob. They’ve been eligible for a few years now. Been throwing their hats in the ring, too — it’s not a terribly high bar. And just in case you think no punk with a GoPro is ever winning an Emmy, remember that cable TV wasn’t invited until 1988, and it took six years for that uncivilized rabble to bring one home. You’ll never guess which network broke the barrier. (Hint: its name includes the letters H, B and O.) Streamed shows first became eligible for certain categories in 2008, and it took only five years for Netflix to finally crack TV’s 64-year hold with three wins for House of Cards last year (directing, casting and cinematography). A smattering of web series have gotten nominations going back to 2011, but all were riding some other brand’s coattails, and none have won. Last year, for instance, Machinima’s web series Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn competed for Best Main Title Design; all of its rivals also had name recognition, including The Newsroom, Elementary, Vikings, American Horror Story: Asylum and Da Vinci’s Demons. Other past web-only series short-form nominees with pedigree have included Jay Leno’s Garage (2011); Bravo’s Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen (2012); and The Office: The Farewells (2013). Surely, the YouTube-native nominee is coming. It will happen, and when it does, it will touch off a cascade. Could this be the year? Mmmmaybe. The category to watch is Outstanding Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program, whose 28 contenders include four native YouTube creators: Arscheerio Paul, Epic Rap Battles of History, Glove and Boots and Guy Dubai: International Gay Spy. The other is Outstanding Short-Format Nonfiction Program, which has just one: The Fine Bros. Benny Fine — one half of the Fine Bros. — isn’t exactly planning to be up at 5:30 a.m. when the nominees are announced July 10. Not when he’s competing against established brands like NBC’s Beyond The Blacklist, Food Network’s Chopped After Hours and ABC’s Nashville: On the Record. But he’s upbeat about submitting, as he should be. “The advantage to a thing like this is showing what new media is becoming,” Fine told Mashable. “Things are just starting to shift. We used to be just two guys, but we’re a production company now (with some 15 employees) … and a nomination would bring us […]
The manically paced new music video for Will.i.am and Britney Spears‘s “Scream and Shout” throws in cameos from several gadgets, including an iPhone, an i-limb ultra prosthetic hand and the new Beats Pill speaker. A snippet of the video premiered Wednesday during The X Factor, followed by its full-length release online. It’s no surprise that a Beats by Dre product got some play in the video, as “Scream and Shout” is the song used in the brand’s most-recent commercial, which stars will.i.am and a slew of other celebrities. YouTube videos exist so they can be shared. And the Internet, as it always does, delivers plenty — but which ones are the best viral videos? Our new pop culture debate show, Monumental, is all about figuring that out (among other things.) Every Tuesday, we’ll sit down with a group of panelists and determine the top four — a.k.a. “Mount Rushmore” — of a familiar pop culture topic. The panelists will be given eight top contenders to choose from, and through rigorous, totally serious debate, they’ll decide who — or what — should be on the final list. In our first episode, above, YouTube legends Shane Dawson and Roman Atwood sit down with host Elliott Morgan to debate which viral videos are the viral-ist(?) of all time. Here are the eight contenders: 1. Gangnam Style Psy’s dance-heavy classic, released over the summer of 2012, became the first YouTube video to reach one billion views in December 2012. “Gangnam fever” soon followed, with notable figures like Barack Obama, David Cameron and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon offering their own interpretations of the dance. 2. Chocolate Rain 3. Rick Astley: “Never Gonna Give You Up” You’ve heard of this one. More appropriately, you’ve fallen victim to this one. English singer-songwriter Rick Astley released the love ballad, “Never Gonna Give You Up,” in 1987. In the early 2000s, it quickly spread as a prank meme: victims would open up a link, supposedly about something completely unrelated, and be surprised with Astley’s video. At least it’s catchy. 4. Sneezing Baby Panda 5. Evolution of Dance Comedian Juddson Laiply (perfectly) performs 12 different popular dances in a row. Enough. Said. 6. Grape Lady Falls 7. Charlie Bit My Finger Maybe it’s their perfect, English-accented diction. Or maybe it’s just because they’re freaking adorable. “Charlie Bit My Finger” hit the web in 2007. At 56 seconds, it’s the most bare-boned video of the bunch — but, come on, it’s a cute kid playfully biting the finger of another cute kid over cute, British-y dialogue. It wins. 8. Leroy Jenkins These are just our top picks. Any you think should have made the cut? Let us know in the comments! Read more: http://mashable.com/2014/08/19/monumental-viral-videos/
The Rolling Stones, who played their first gig 50 years ago, have returned after a seven-year hiatus. The English rockers debuted a new single, “Doom and Gloom,” Thursday on BBC Radio 2. A mopey lyric video accompanies the release and draws even more attention to the band’s zombie reference: “I had a dream last night I was piloting a plane, and all the passengers were drunk and insane,” Mick Jagger belts. “I crash landed in a Louisiana swamp, shot up a horde of zombies but I come out on top.” Zombies and exploding heads aside, “Doom and Gloom” is a track from GRRR!, the group’s forthcoming three-disc greatest hits compilation due out Nov. 12. The Rolling Stones made headlines in the tech world earlier this year when a clever 404 error message on its website surfaced. Are you digging the band’s new tune? Does it make you want to watch The Walking Dead right now, too? BONUS: 9 Celebrity Zombies Show Brain-Eating Side of Fame Zombie Celebrities 1. Lady Gaga You can’t read my Zombie Face. Zach Anner’s Reddit-powered cross-country road trip is complete, and finally premiering on YouTube. The series, Riding Shotgun With Zach Anner, is a travel show that evolved from Anner’s former show on the OWN network. The comic won a contest after charming the online communities of Reddit and 4chan with self-deprecating humor that poked fun at his own affliction — cerebral palsy. Anner took to Reddit after the short-lived cable series was cancelled due to poor ratings. The new series is the first to have an official branded subreddit. With help from Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, Anner and his friends traveled to six cities, suggested by the Reddit community: Montreal, Boston, Baltimore, Blacksburg, Va., Savannah, New Orleans, Denver and Vancouver. After selecting the itinerary, the team sought out local redditors to give their take on each city. Throughout the six-week trip, the guys released teasers of the crazy antics to keep viewers updated on their travels. They did everything from reading romance novels at the filming location of Dirty Dancing to performing on Bourbon Street with the 610 stompers to drinking “dragon’s blood” in Montreal. The new series, which is hosted on YouTube, already has more than two million views and 25,000 subscribers. Anner will host a Reddit AMA on Tuesday at 11 a.m. EST to kick it off. Will you be tuning into Riding Shotgun With Zach Anner? Let us know what you think of the online-powered endeavor in the comments below. Forget about apes. Pugs are the real threat to human domination. With the release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes this weekend, it’s all too easy to get that wrong — so we turned to Pet Collective to set the record straight. In this YouTube video, one man learns the hard way that the cuteness of a pug is just a facade. When he finds an abandoned pug in a box in the middle of the wilderness, he takes it in just like anyone with a working heart would. He’s fooled by those irresistible wrinkles and aloof facial expressions. In no time, he finds himself in the midst of a war between pugs and humans. He’s taken “one of theirs” and the pugs go to great lengths to retrieve him. Get ready to wrinkle up your face, pug-style, as you watch this agonizing war play out. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DTAT_ATF’); }); Typically, the only thing you should put in the microwave is food. But if you put Ivory soap in the microwave for one to two minutes, something amazing happens. Because Ivory soap has pockets of air and water inside of it, a solid bar of soap turns into a fluffy soap soufflé right in front of your eyes when heated. Your kids are sure to be amazed by this fun science experiment. Plus, your kitchen will smell like it just took a shower. Watch the video below to find out why this crazy phenomenon happens. After the soap has been microwaved, it’s still totally useable. In fact, you might even conserve more soap by using less in the shower. Pretty cool, huh?! Black Friday Bedlam 1. Waffle Riot We’ve heard of Bread Riots, Pussy Riots and even Quiet Riots. But this, my friends, is a Waffle Riot. Anarchy reigns as this crowd of Walmart shoppers struggles to get their hands on some $2 waffle irons. 2. Towel Tussle Which do you think was worse: the struggle to get these cheap towels or their friends’ and family members’ disappointed looks with cheap towel gifts? 3. Fightin’ Words Historical trends dictate that people who wear leather jackets tend to be much tougher and more intimidating than the rest of us (maybe). Anyway, check out how this guy goes all ad baculum on a crowd of people outside a Best Buy, when they complain about him cutting the line. 4. Pepper Spray Spree Back to Walmart, where a woman in Los Angeles used pepper spray on a crowd of people, including children, to get her hands on a new Xbox. 5. Brawl at the Mall Can we get Jerry “The King” Lawler and Jim Ross to provide some commentary on this royal rumble? The quality of this video is extremely shoddy, but it contains some pretty shocking footage. 6. Dramatization Here’s what the last clip might have looked like if the videographer had a steadier hand. 7. Bloody Grandpa This grandpa is badly bloodied after police officers tackled him. The police believed the man to be a shoplifter. This raw smartphone footage gives an even better look at the incident, but be forewarned, it includes explicit language. 8. The Peanut Gallery You won’t find shocking violence in this video, but check out the crowd of people who aren’t even there to shop, just to film. 9. Urban Outfitters Urban regions are often over-populated, but at midnight on Black Friday, this Urban Outfitters crams in so many people it looks more like a New York tenement house during the 1860s. 10. In Conclusion Here’s a mashup from Jingle All the Way in which Arnold, the great thespian that he is, manages to perfectly capture the plight of the Black Friday shopper.
