‘We’re Apple, And You’re Suckers,’ Says iPad Mini Parody Ad

, , , , , , , ,

The new iPad mini was released Friday, and Jimmy Kimmel doesn’t seem very enthusiastic about it. In a parody iPad mini commercial that aired on Jimmy Kimmel Live Thursday, first came the iPod. Then a thinner iPod. Then an iPod you can touch. Then lots of other iPods — ones that allow you to shuffle your songs, ones you can talk on, a gigantic one you can’t talk on. And today, Apple released a slightly bigger iPod that you can’t talk on. Which, according to the video, pretty much means we’re all suckers. iPad Mini at the Apple 5th Ave Store The flagship Buyers started lining up to buy Apple’s long-anticipated iPad Mini at the flagship store the day before it went on sale. All-weather Apple fans Undaunted by the long lines and the cold, hundreds waited all night for the Apple store to open at 10am. One of the first A proud owner shows off his new purchase. Surfer Tackles 80-Foot Wave That Could Break a World Record

, , , , , ,

Andrew Cotton, a 34-year-old surfer from England, took on one of the biggest waves of all time on Sunday despite harsh weather conditions in Portugal. When the crest of the 80-foot wave caught up with him, he tumbled, disappearing beneath the water’s surface for a brief moment. Cotton told the BBC his fall was “pretty bad” and described the windy conditions as “bordering on unsurfable.” He was wearing an inflatable vest which shot him up to the surface of the water. Cotton qualifies for the Ride of the Year category in the 2014 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards. The judges of the event will decide in March whether he managed to break the world record for surfing the biggest wave, a title currently held by Garrett McNamara, who surfed a 78-foot wave in Nazaré. Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal, where Cotton rode the 80-foot wave, was the same place that a surfer named Carlos Burle caught an estimated 100-foot wave in October 2013. However, Guinness has not officially confirmed that ride as record-setting, so McNamara still holds the No. 1 spot — for now. Read more: http://mashable.com/2014/02/04/surfer-portugal-wave/

Amazed Scientist Discovers He Was Right About the Big Bang All Along

, , , , , ,

Imagine knowing that your entire philosophy on life — all you ever worked for — was proven right. That’s what just happened to Andrei Linde, a physics professor at Stanford University, upon the discovery of proof of gravitational wave. “Tremors” of the Big Bang are the waves said to be the first definitive evidence of the theory that the universe is expanding. It’s also an integral part of a theory that Linde has been working on for 30 years — meaning his theories were not only right, but also a huge contributor to the future of space study. Chao-Lin Kuo, an assistant physics professor at Stanford who worked with a team on the new discovery, surprised Linde at his home with the news. Watch the heartwarming revelation above. Paul Ryan Talks ‘Steak Baby’ in Bad Lip Reading

, , ,

GOP vice presidential nominee and Steak Baby frontman Paul Ryan unveiled the band’s new single, “Quench Your Heartbeat,” that features rockin’ lyrics like “I’ll make a sandwich, I’ll help a moose.” Okay, so 98 percent of that last sentence is false, but it could have earned the Wisconsin congressman a few cool points. The lip reading not-so-much-experts on YouTube put words in Ryan’s mouth that paint the veep candidate as a scatterbrained statesman looking to hit it big with his band. Party on, Paul. Joss Whedon Loves BriTANicK and So Should You

, , , ,

Last year, Joss Whedon switched gears from his usual fantasy-fueled projects to tackle a classic. The result was a modern day update of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Whedon packed the film with actors from his hit TV shows and movies, including Amy Acker, Nathan Fillion and Fran Kanz. But two of the actors featured in film were plucked straight off the Internet by the director. Comedians Brian McElhaney and Nick Kocher, together known as BriTANicK (rhymes with Titanic), have been writing, directing and performing on their own YouTube channel since 2008. While they’ve both dipped their toes into film, both separately and together, Whedon’s project was their first time working on a major studio film project. The duo’s roles might have been small — the characters are simply named First and Second Watchman — but they definitely made a huge impression on the direction and cast. Mashable talked with McElhaney and Kocher about their experience diving into Whedon-verse. The man behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly first connected with the BriTANicK when he linked to their “Academy Award Winning Movie Trailer” video on his blog. “He also said he really loved ‘Team Work‘ and ‘Eagles,’” McElhaney said, referring to another video as well as their short film, “Eagles Are Turning People Into Horses,” that was made as McElhaney’s final thesis at New York University. When asked whether their Shakespearean bits, “A Monologue for Three” and its precursor “A Monologue for Thee” were perhaps a factor, they laughed, “I don’t think anyone would cast us in Shakespeare based on that, but you know, maybe.” Probably not, since they can’t even remember the quintessential lines. The filming for Much Ado took place in Whedon’s expansive Calif. home. The cast stayed in hotels, but McElhaney and Kocher admitted that sometimes it would turn into a “slumber party situation.” “We were really accepted into their family.” McElhaney added, “It was really laid back. It didn’t feel like a set. It was like f*cking around with friends.” They noted that for all of their differences in experience, the rest of the cast never acted like “Hollywood types.” The cast even took a shine to one of the duo’s favorite past times, a game they invented called “Running Flip Cup Charades.” As you can probably guess from the title, it’s a slightly complicated drinking game. They even played the aerobic game on the ensemble’s 24-hour back-and-forth tour bus trip from Los Angeles, Calif. to Austin, Texas, where the film was being shown at SXSW. McElhaney described running around the bus for four hours in the middle of the night as “magical.” They were also encouraged to spend that time on the bus promoting the film on social media, particularly Twitter and Vine. Kocher explained that it sometimes led to awkwardness: “Something cool would happen, and then it would be kind of weird while everyone silently tweeted about it.” BriTANicK “SHIT! It sounds nice: chilling on the back deck, dropping a fishing line in the water — then this happens. In the immortal words of someone from the freshly uploaded YouTube video above: “It’s a big-ass shark!” The video was uploaded with minimal information by user Sarah Brame and YouTube’s view count hasn’t caught up yet — but this is one fishing tale destined to go viral. Everyone has a “one that got away” story, but Brame’s comes with seemingly authentic video proof. Read more: http://mashable.com/2012/07/11/big-ass-shark/

Relive Fall in Central Park With Time-Lapse Video

, , , , ,

Anyone who has been to New York’s Central Park in the fall can attest to the impressive display of color against the steel and glass of the city. Sure, we’ve all seen time-lapse videos. But there is something truly magical about this one by filmmaker, Jamie Scott. Many of the transitions move across the field of view from left to right, as if the color is being chased down by the shadow of winter. Scott said he chose 15 locations in the park and then revisited them two days a week for six months. If the lighting appears similar, it’s because all of the shots were taken just after sunrise. Pugs Are the Real Threat to Mankind

Dad Makes Awesome ‘Aliens’ Halloween Costume for Daughter

, , ,

Halloween has always been a good chance for parents and kids to bond. But this dad took it to another level — or shall we say, to another planet? Inspired by the movie Aliens, YouTube user Jason Smith built a Power Loader robot suit, so that he and his daughter could go around at Halloween wearing the same costume. He became the suit, while his daughter basically became Sigourney Weaver. The costume, constructed of cardboard boxes and hot glue, took two nights and a day for Smith to make, according to his video description. “My highest priority was keeping my little girl safe, so the costume was designed for mobility and quick exit in case of emergency,” writes Smith. Bonus points for being an imaginative and responsible dad. Watch the video above to see this amazing two person costume in action. have you ever seen anything like this? Watercolor Artist Brings the Wonders of Space to the Canvas

, , , , ,

One painter’s watercolor works brings out the wonders of space in the safety of her studio. Connecticut-based artist Stella Maria Baer’s dreamy planet paintings have earned her more than 100,000 followers on Instagram. Her neat, but detailed watercolors capture the moon’s rough texture, Mars’ soft oranges and maroons and Saturn’s wide rings. Baer told Mashable that her planet watercolors draw inspiration from April’s Blood Moon eclipse. More of her planetary art is available on Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter.
