googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DTBT_ATF’); }); If there is one species that Earth’s oceans are abundant with, it’s jellyfish. Thanks to climate change and the general warming of the planet, our oceans are becoming a much more hospitable place for all sorts of jellyfish. However, there will always be those more mysterious and elusive sub-species. Consider the stygiomedusa gigantea. It is a species of giant jellyfish that is among the rarest in the world. Over the past 110 years, there have only been 115 sightings. According to those who have studied it, stygiomedusa gigantea is one of the largest invertebrate predators in the world. While its sightings have been rare, luckily a few of the recent ones have been by unmanned ROV vehicles, which allow us to get up close with these terrifying, majestic creatures. Well, this is going to give me nightmares for a year. Read more: http://www.viralnova.com/stygiomedusa-gigantea/
googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DTAT_ATF’); }); Last year we introduced you to the horror that is the horsehair worm. It’s a nasty little parasite that likes to infest insects like roaches, crickets, grasshoppers, and beetles. Once inside, the parasite alters the creature’s brain chemistry and makes it commit suicide in a body of water, which is the only place the worm can breed. Occasionally, you might kill a bug that was already carrying a horsehair worm. When that happens, you often have a front row seat to some top-notch grossness. Watch and learn how you kill these terrible creepy-crawlies. That is probably the grossest thing I think I’ve ever seen. Read more: http://www.viralnova.com/cricket-nightmare/
In Australia, the seasons are reversed from the way we experience them here in North America. Now, as North America is preparing for the wonder that is fall, Australia is getting ready for spring. And what better way to kick off the season than by finding two male carpet pythons fighting each other right outside your window? googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); }); From the uploader: “Two male carpet pythons locked in combat outside the window after falling from roof on first day of Australian spring. My son and I watched with fascination and slight disgust, and unfortunately, he learned a few swear words.” Oh, that is the most terrifying thing ever. And remember, this is the just the start of spring. Imagine how many more horrible situations are likely to befall the maker of this video by the time summer rolls around? When exploring abandoned places is your passion, you need to be ready for the unexpected to happen at pretty much any moment. Seasoned urban explorers all have their own kind of rituals and safety precautions when they’re on the job. For example, in interviews with urban explorer Seph Lawless, he said that he occasionally carries a gun with him while exploring certain places. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBP_ATF’); }); However, for photographer and urban explorer Freaktography, nothing could have prepared him for what some believe he encountered inside this beautiful abandoned home in Ontario, Canada. Freaktography googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCBM_BTF’); }); The old stone house, which stood not far from the shores of Lake Michigan, was beginning to collapse in on itself. Freaktography Freaktography Just imagine how beautiful this home must have been before it was abandoned. Freaktography googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DCI1_BTF’); }); Freaktography Old wallpaper still hangs in some of the rooms. Freaktography A dizzying view of the grand staircase. Freaktography While these pictures make the house look very abandoned, Freaktography was possibly not the only being inside the house on this particular day. Freaktography In addition to the photos, he also took some video. While he doesn’t remember anything weird happening, reviewing the footage later he spotted something weird dart across the camera at about the 1:25 mark. Could this house be haunted? Looks like it. (source Freaktopgraphy) Whoa. Alright, that was freaky as hell. For more photos like these, make sure to follow Freaktography on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. In the 1970s, Britain was experiencing an alarmingly high number of child fatalities from drowning. So the government decided to do something about it. In 1973, the Central Office of Information, in association with Illustra Films, produced a PSA entitled Lonely Water. The PSA featured a demonic figure warning children to stay away from the water. It ran for several years during commercial breaks in children’s television programming. But was it effective? Check it out below and see for yourself… Today, Lonely Water has achieved cult status, especially among adults who were children at the time it aired. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it also terrified millions of British children into never swimming again. Well, at least it kept them from drowning…? Read more: http://www.viralnova.com/drowning-psa/
Anyone who’s graduated from an American high school has probably had the pleasure of dissecting an animal in biology class. Usually frogs are in the syllabus, but sometimes, the animal of choice is a cat. Typically, these dissections are treated as solemn and respectful affairs. Other times, though, they can go off the rails. That’s what I’d like to think is happening in the video below, which shows a biology class at Winston Churchill High School in San Antonio, Texas, using the intestines of a cat to play jump rope. Allegedly, the teacher claimed it was to test tensile strength, but I think there are better ways to do that than by hosting a morbid game of jump rope. What’s even crazier is that this isn’t the first time this has happened! As you might imagine, PETA is not happy about what’s going on in this video. They’ve allegedly petitioned the school district to take action against the teacher. So far, as of this writing, district officials are defending the teacher and students. The mantis shrimp, if you’re not familiar, is one of the deadliest ocean creatures in its weight class. Your average adult is around 10 inches long and has claws that really pack a punch. Some species of mantis shrimp smash prey with claws that can literally strike with the force of a bullet fired at close range. Other species of mantis shrimp, however, are “spearers.” This means that they wait for unsuspecting fish to swim over their burrows and then, WHAM! They strike out with their claws and grab their prey. It’s a lot more brutal than it sounds. (via Reddit) Nature is intense, and so is the guy who owns this mantis shrimp. Think about it. He’s buying all of these expensive tropical fish so that he can put them inside the tank with his mantis shrimp. That’s twisted. Read more: http://www.viralnova.com/mantis-shrimp-spear/
googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DTAT_ATF’); }); What do you fear more, snakes or spiders? Personally, I go with spiders every time…I hate those things. However, I might have to revise my very scientific decision in the snake vs. spider debate and nominate a third species for most terrifying: the centipede. I know what you’re thinking: “Centipede? Really? This guy has nerves of glass.” While you’re probably right about that last part, I have a very good reason to fear centipedes over snakes or spiders. Just watch the video below to see what I mean. Spoiler alert: the centipede catches a bat out of the air. (via Reddit) See what I mean? Now don’t panic. Deadly centipedes like this only live in certain areas, so you’re probably safe. But it still might not be a bad idea to stock up on ammo and bug spray, just in case. This weekend, many parts of the U.S. were slammed with record low temperatures for this time of year. What followed the cold plunge was the typical moaning and groaning on social media. While I’m not saying people shouldn’t have the right to complain about the weather, what I want to call for is a little perspective. For example, at least the weather wasn’t an Antarctic “condition one.” A condition one is called when wind speed is over 62 miles per hour, visibility is less than 98 feet, and windchill is below −99 °F. During a condition one, outside travel is not permitted. Curious about what a condition one looks like? Here you go… (via WILX) Just imagine getting caught outside in those conditions. There’s no possible way a human would make it back to safety in one piece. So remember, the next time you’re complaining about the cold, at least it’s not a condition one. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘VN_PG_DTAT_ATF’); }); Theft is something that every retail store on Earth has to deal with. Yes, that even includes gun shops. You’d think that trying to steal something from a store full of guns and potentially armed patrons would dissuade criminals from trying to shoplift, and it does, to an extent. Some thieves are just braver than most. That’s why they prefer the flashy smash-and-grab approach over stealthy shoplifting. Just check out this security camera footage from a particularly over-the-top break in at a gun store in Houston, Texas. Back in early March, a group of 10 masked men used a truck to literally pull the gate off of a gun store in the early morning hours. #War SHOCK: Massive Gun Store Robbery In Houston Caught On Camera… https://t.co/rviCZeOzf3 pic.twitter.com/kQtYhq9dta — Warfare (@warfarenyc) April 7, 2016 The organized group of men then proceeded to ransack the store, smashing display cases and grabbing rifles off of the racks.
